This drive has been in my garage for a few years as a spare.I moved it today and saw the crack. This drive was serviced and painted ,ready to go so when I ran my finger over the crack and paint came off it leads me to believe it was leaking something. If I remember correctly this area is a cavity along side the shifter and not the lube area..What do you guys think?? Charlie

Had this spare Alpha drive in the back of my garage for several years ,serviced, standing on its skeg and ready to go in case I needed it. Pulled it out last week and found it had a crack. The cavity behind the crack is hollow so Im thinking of cleaning it up good ,wiping with acetone and using some JB weld .Gonna have to build it up a little for strength so it may ultimately look like it has the mumps...lol. Anyone ever do this before??? Charlie

That crack won’t affect anything, it the drain hole for the cavity. grind it out a tad and jb. Drain the oil and pressure check the drive to make sure there is no other damage.

I patched an exhaust manifold that cracked from a freeze up. it held up for the next 10 years or more.

Gee, any idea what caused the injury? It would be bad to fix it and have it happen again.
The drive has been standing on its skeg for several year in my garage.I am assuming there was a slight crack already there that got a little worse.I def cleaned some of the cavity out while servicing the water pump as there was some mucky crap in there.Cleaned out what I could by spooning it up with a screwdriver .Was def not filled with water. If you do the repair with JB Weld, you might grind out some alum. on the inside of the crack, and wipe before with acetone, before the repair. The outside might need some JB, to finish filling the crack, but try to minimize that, with the inside repair.

I am not going to be able to get to the inside where the crack is.There is no room and its a little too far down.Gonna be outside only.I will repair it while laying it down crack side up to help some JB get into the crack. I may also just take a shortcut after cleaning it up good and drip some 5200 or RTV on the crack.RTV seems to hold up really well .I put some between my lift cylinder lines to stop them from rubbing together and it hold up really well.Charlie
