Another Guy With Force 120 Issue

The pressure from the hose isn't strong enough to push water past the pump and up to the head/thermo.
Hook the hose to the tube and turn it on, shouldn't need that much pressure to make water come up to the thermo.
If it overheated almost immediately?? then maybe the sending unit is grounded out?
Should take a few minutes for it to heat up???
Well. Took to water and it pumps water. But still over heating. All 4 cylinders hit 180s under idle and high idle. I'm at a loss. Very discouraged not beaten but discouraged.

Force Power....gonna call a shop tomorrow and try the impeller. I'm not able to tackle it. Just can't imagine. Water shooting out both holes from back as well as tell tail.

Possible: the new impeller isn't spinning with the shaft?
The brass insert breaks loose and spins but the impeller doesn't send water to the block??
The key in the impeller moved?
The old impeller when removed were all the vanes still intact?

What do you mean "I'm not able to tackle it"
If you can pull the head off, replace the head-gasket/own a torque wrench to torque the bolts to proper spec. You can replace an impeller :)

Also.....(going on a limb here) if this is a '90 is the LU set up for a flow-through hub? does it have a flow-through prop?

If you can pull the head off, replace the head-gasket/own a torque wrench to torque the bolts to proper spec. You can replace an impeller :)

Haha. Well ya just have to know Force Power. I can work standing up but working on something low ....is let just say the years have caught up with me. I'd have to work from the ground up and my old body can't do it anymore.

Ooh....I hear ya, after 20+ year on the shop floor I can't crouch for more than 2 minutes either.
If the boat is on the trailer, tilt the motor as far up as possible an wedge something in between so it stays get a chair to sit on when you undoing the bolts that way you spend the least amount of time straining.
After the removal put the lower-unit in a vise clamped down by the Skeg. OR make a small stand out of a milk crate. then you can work on it at any desired height.
let me know about the flow through hub or a pick of the LU to see where the pick up holes are

Explain this....in an act of desperation I pulled out the brand new 130 degrees thermo and put the cover back on. Boat ran well. I even towed another stranded boater and wife 3 miles to dock. Boat alarm never sounded. Spent time fishing after that.....is 130 degrees too high? It's what's recommended...

Pan of water on the stove, turn the heat up and watch the thermo to see if it opens like it should?
It's not in backwards? don't think it can?

I did test it. Checks out ok. Can't put in backwards but can wrong order but not the case here. We've had some cool days here. Going to test alarm. Part of me hopes it's faulty...parts of me hopes not.

One of the best, cheapest tools in my tool box is a 16$ temp gun.
It can show where the hot spots are and IF??? the motors really getting hot.

All cylinder heads are warped.-----Did you refinish the head before installing the new gasket ?-----A leak into water jackets can lead to overheating !

Greetings again.
First just want to say thank you for all the help. I think this problem solved. Called mercury service in Charlotte. Tech called the force 120 a bare bones outboard with their own quirks. He suggested all the things you guys did. Ended up testing heat buzzer. Should have done that first. Seems to be possessed by a demon. Out of 5 test could not get it to sound twice at same temp. Damn thing went off once while cooling down. Tech said not to fret over cylinder temp...felt they were in tolerance under condition I put them in. Also said bottom cylinder will run hotter cause it gets fuel first. Silver lining...would have never found torque issue . Replacing buzzer soon. Been out with no heating concerns. Gonna start new thread regarding loss of power at high rpm. Thanks again y'all really

Me neither but then again...i know next to nothing. It's running. Well at least up to 3500 to 4500 rpms then starts surging like it's starving for fuel. It was doing this before. I started a new thread on that issue. It's the final hurdle I have. Thread titled "1990 force 120 2 stroke loss of power high rpm" if you wanna chime in. I can always use advise. Thanks for past help. PS I put thermo back. Waiting on new buzzer.
