I have a 76 starcraft aluiminum boat 16ft that I am restoring. The bottom I am going to prime with zinc crominum primer but above the waterline I want to leave it bare/polished metal. is there any issues with doing this? I have considered using a por 15 product that contains phospheric acid. will this be enough to chemically alter the metal to withstand corrosion or should I use something else. Help!!!!

Re: another aluiminum prep question!

Acid leaves a blotchy finish, really hard to get it uniform.

I would go with Sharkhyde or something similar, it is a little pricey but you will do it once and it will last as long as you have the boat.

I would get a fine Scotch brite pad and scuff the part you want shiny in one direction front to back, you want all the scratches to be in one direction, then hit it with the shark hyde and forget it.

I use the Scotch brites at work when I fix toons, if you do it right it looks like new virgin aluminum.
