Which in your all's opinion is the best rope to use for your anchor? 100ft is what i have now for my boat to anchor for fishing. But was curious what you would think is the best type of rope

I have Ozark trail double braided anchor rope. 250 lbs working limit. For my small boat that is fine. Depends on what size of boat you have and where your boating

Where I boat the lake at it's deepest is 40 feet so I feel 100 feet of line is good for me

I am using 150 feet of 5/8" triple braided nylon (3-strand) line rated at 11,000# with 10 feet of chain for the primary anchor and 150 feet of 3/8" triple braid rated at 4000# for the backup.

with a 10:1 scope on the rode, I am good for anchoring in 15'. anything less than 5:1 scope and you risk pulling the anchor out

The best type of line will be determined by your boat, the wind load, the current load, the condition of the line and splices and the anchor type.

my next big purchase is 300' of line for the primary and backup.

I have a Lowe Olympic 1862, 60hp motor, usually just 2 guys in the boat with a cooler for adult beverages, fishing tackle and bait. I haven't had any isuses as of yet. I boat on the mississippi river between Quincy IL and Saverton Dams. Alot of the fishing is close to the Quincy Dam as its good all around for just catching fish. I currenty use 3/8ths line and honestly cant tell you the type anymore. There are no splices in the line or anything.

How big is the boat, weight of boat, depth of water average, i always use braided line, more limp, easier on hands, fewer kinks and twists. The diameter of the line is based on those first few questions. I have my line in three 50' increments, easy to add on if extra length is needed. An anchor chain is a must on larger boats ( over 14'). In deep or rough water or strong current. Type of anchor depends on the type of bottom your anchoring in !!

I use 250' of 1/2 braided plus 25' of 1/4" chain for a 26' boat on Lake Tahoe.

I use a Fortress anchor.

I don't like poly as it doesn't resist abrasion....course moot point but do you really want your anchor rope to float.....a floating ski rope is different....no abrasion and you want it to float. I don't like Sisal as it is abrasive to your hands. Nylon stretches but resists water damage and has been my favorite for years

Was in a sailing regatta some years ago.----Race every day over a week.----About 20 of the sailboats were caught by a squall.----Howling wind and you could not see a thing past the boat.-----When it all cleared up the sailboats all survived.---Just 2 powerboats dragged on the beach.-----When you really need a bigger anchor or line ( ground tackle ) you can't buy it and nobody will loan it to you !!

Thanks for the all the replies. My 18 1/2 ft jon boat isnt much to anchor. Usually when we can get the anchor to hold it will be good to go and no floating rope. One of them i do have does float tho! Might need to replace eventually. Im planning on getting an extra 200' of rope 100' sections so may just get replacement rope for the anchors and use whats on there now as backup. I bought a new storage box for tools and a new one for misc fishing items, solar charger, spotlight and what not to fit in. so i have room in the box for storing more rope! Im ready to get on the water! had a few great days in the mid 60's and started getting the boat ready for the summer and now its back in the 40's blah! The trend is heading upward tho!

My coast gard instructor made the comment that when laying in a pile on the floor of your boat it is a rope, but once you drop anchor it becomes a "rode"....lol..

There are many types of rope that are made with polyester. Mine is a braided polyester and I assure you it doesn't float.

Polyproline used for ski lines does float.

When you say Poly, you are talking shorthand for many types of material.

Gee, I bought 300' of 1/2" 3 strand nylon line on the web for $40. You can find some bargains on the web.

I am able to splice in the thimble myself, so I did not need to buy a package from a marine store for a lot more $$.

Hate the 3 strand line as it is hard on the hands and seems to be much stiffer...just my opinion though, much prefer the braided lines which are typically more costly!!
I guess my old soft hands deserve a little comfort...

Sand or rock bottom you will anchor in? Minimum 1/2" diameter and length 3x the depth you will fish in (for normal weather). The key is to have lots of chain to hold anchor down so that it will dig in (if in sand bottom) . I don't fish on rocks or on top of wrecks. I don't like buying new anchors.
