I've just rebuilt the transom from the outside on my 78 StarCraft American to the best of my ability using Arjay 6011 (aka carbon core). I had intended on "cheating" and hogging out the core and just pouring in but after I got into it, it was obvious that was not going to work so I wound up cutting the back off. Happily found at the starboard side stringer/floor was good, but the port side did have rot going back about 6 inches in both the stringer and floor. Cut out section of floor hogged out stringer back to good wood and poured in 6011.
Anyway, did the pour yesterday and it's all back together now. Now I'm not quite sure how to finish things off. Specifically the top of the transom (transom cap?) where the motor mounts. Can I fair directly over the 6011 or should I wrap cloth and resin before faring? (Obviously I'm going to build up with cloth and resin around the perimeter of the transom panel.) i'll say one thing the transom seems as hard as cement like other people have said it's got to be stronger than it was originally. Although I win absolutely no points for neatness in its application!
