Its illeagel for you to operate your boat in any manor to cause it to come completely out of the water... atleast in PA it is.

Really? wow! I'd be pretty much illegal every time i've gone out this summer. My boat will leave the water just by hitting a halfway decent wake.

To the OP... You need a jet boat! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more fun can be had in one, and its built to stand up to it far better than a typical I/O.

Re: Am I stupid for doing this?

So I guess the engineer in me is getting the better of me. I'm not ever planning on doing this as it sounds like it could be hard on the equipment - and I paid way too much for my equipment (not to mention the safety aspects). But I have to ask, what is the physics behind what is happening. I'm just not getting it. I've made whirlpools in swimming pools by running around the perimeter in the water with a few friends, but I can't imagine this is happening here - unless the prop wash is creating it. Is it just standing waves being created in the center of the circle? Can anyone explain it to me? Again, just curious, not going to try it, or even condone it. Thanks!

I just watched a guy about a week ago doing doughnuts while pulling his kids on a tube. The center of the doughnut looked like a reverse whirlpool, which I believed was caused by the wakes amplifying when they hit/merged with each other. The center was about 4'+ high. I think this is what he's jumping. From the science end of it, I think it relates to 2 equal and opposite forces colliding, like when a wave hits a seawall, it goes straight up.

exactly. built up wakes. a sloppy mess.

For those of you with new boats who need to know what your boat can handle, this is a good way to set up some waves and chop, then practice running through them BUT AT SAFE SPEED and not where you bother or endanger others. Make your circles with the stern dragging (not on a plane) for bigger wake. It won't hurt your boat if you're reasonable about it. If it does, replace your boat.
