reading some of the posts from a new member vic (age 14) gets me thinking. he's gonna buy a boat for around $2500 and looking to outfit it with a $75 radio and who knows what else. I'm happy for him.

i remember just a few short years ago (feels like that anyway) using every penny i saved over 4 years of hard work to buy my first vehicle- an old chevy s-10 for $1200. i almost passed out when i handed over the check.

i guess the value of money changes quickly. i'm sure you older fellas have even better examples...

I'm 14. And almost fell over when I handed over a check for 1,400 when I bought my NOS 15hp merc. I's not that the value changes, it's how eazy the money comes.

11

Re: am i getting old?

Several things at work here. 1. Things cost more so the amounts may be different but the price is about the same as it used to be. 2. We have gone from a society where money was always short in supply and kids had to earn some for things they wanted to money being easier to get and parents give out allowances and such for kids to get things. 3. $75 for a radio for a boat that's cheap. 4. The boat price ain't bad either. 5 When I was that age about 19 years ago (been that dang long?) I actually had that much money and then some from working and saving (farm boy and worked hard cleaning dog pens, selling firewood and then corn from the land daddy let me clear doing that) which some of these kids now still do (landscaping and such). It takes a while to get that much mowing grass and such but at a minimum of $20 for a postage stamp yard they can get it.
I don't see where a young person with his or her head screwed on straight enough to buy a boat instead of FuBu outfits and Jordan shoes should be that amazing. Of course that still does not mean you are not old just out of touch with how teenagers are these days.

Re: am i getting old?

I make money just like you guys said. I cut 17 lawns a week in the summer time. The cheepest lawn I cut is 20 bucks a cut. Most is 40bucks a cut and a bunch in between. I make about 4,000 a summer cuting grass and working on my uncles truck. Of corse not all of it makes it to the boat fund Only big thinks I've bought are my 11' whaler, then a year later I repowerd it. I'd like to find a 15' or 17' whaler. Hopefully next fall.

N=new
O=old
S=stock

Motor was a 1990 15hp merc in a crate.

11

It's all about age. When I was single, I had all the toys. Now there's always something that needs attention more. In high school, I had a $500.00 car with $1200.00 wheels and tires and a $2000.00 stereo. :D Dad bought me the car, I did the rest... oh yes, the 80's were a fond time for me :D

Re: am i getting old?

good post MAN I am in my mid 30's I was 13 when I bought my first boat. AH I remember the fine day everything was perfect the boat the day the motor everything except me I orgot the plug and sank the boat in 5 feet of water. But I have learned from that. as some one says PLUG WHAT PLUG? I had to work everyday for 2 summers with my dad to earn the money for the boat. Glad to see the kid earned the boat as opposed to it being given to him. Way to go Kid!!!!!

Re: am i getting old?

My father pased down his views, where money was concerned, to me. He said his father taught him,"It doesn't matter how much you earn throughout your lifetime. Don't always try to compare with years gone by in dollar terms. Try our old way - It used to cost a days wages for accomodation, a days wages for transport, a days wages for food, a days wages for entertainment, and a days wages for tax."
Today it appears to be almost the same give or take a bit. My kids like that one.
Ross
