Re: Aluminum vhull to bass boat

Go thru some of the Starcraft threads listed here:
Starcraft Rebuilds and Restorations

Lots of possibilities whether you leave the covered bow intact, or cut it out on the 16ft Jupiter........

BTW: I'd meet you on the far side of Columbus from you. I'm 3+hrs east of Columbus. I just need some time to make a plan to get the Pioneer back. I currently don't have a flatbed I could tow the Jupiter to you on, or an open bed pickup to put bring the Pioneer back.

Re: Aluminum vhull to bass boat

It's 13' 9" long 4' 5" wide and 1' 5" tall at the rear and 2' at the bow. I took it out in my pond stood on the seat and tried to tip it and did not succeed.

That's good. But did you think it was unstable or tippy? A boat capsizing is one issue, but I would be more concerned about falling out of it, from loosing my balance. I have a 1436 jonboat (less stable than yours) and I have to watch standing up in it, unless I want to go swimming.

Also my boat has no floatation foam under the seats so I don't have to worry about that.

That's bad. If the boat fills with water for any reason while out on the lake, it's going to the bottom..... Old boats like that were built without flotation foam as it wasn't required by law back then, but it's one of the things that the boat needs to have in it. The foam could have been removed or disintegrated too, 50+ years is a long time for the cheap foam they used in tinneys, to last.

Not that I recommend what you have planned, but be sure to use thin materials to keep weight down on the boat. Design it with 1/2", 3/8" and 1/4" plywood in the right places, with gussets in the corners to add strength. Forget about 3/4" plywood and 2x4's, or the thing is going to weight a ton. Look through some of the resto threads to see how aluminum boat manufacturers put them together.

I can't trade it. It wasn't tippy and my grandpa actually had decking on the boat years ago he showed me his layout and we drew out the same thing he did so it's a proven design he used 3/4 non treated plyw

Not a problem, until you pull out the benches, the offer stands. Your grandads' boat modified is still your grandad's boat.

I'm not going to pull the seats or cut anything this is the final designimage.jpg all of the live well plumbing will be ran over the transom wether I use 3/4 inch or 1/2 inch is debatable I'm going to use untreated plywood and brush thompsons water seal onto it (as long as it doesn't eat up the aluminum like pt does) then carpet it. Will 1/2 hold a 280lb and 120lb kid ( we would be on different decks)?

You should use spar urethane rather than Thompson's, the spar is a much better product and a quart would do the job on both sides of the ply. Put down some foam board in the area that has enough room below the deck to add not only flotation but support as well and 1/2" ply should do alright.

Hmmm 14 ft aluminum boat... Plywood decking and framing, carpet, plumbing, livewell, two passengers, Gas Tank, Motor. I wonder what the Weight capacity is for that boat????

Even though you admit you're an old okie, I still like how you think:

What's it rated weight capacity? All that lumber & decking is going to add a fair amount of weight. More constructed weight means less fuel, people & gear.
:D

400lbs in people alone, from above......

1/2" ply is 50#/sheet and 3/4 ply is 75#/sheet, so 1/2" will be fine, good strength to weight. If you're worries about standing on it, put some braces underneath the wide spans. Use 5-ply, 1/2" plywood as it's a lot more rigid than normal 1/2 ply.

You should move some weight forward if you want the boat to plane well. The livewell, fuel tank, battery and outboard placed where they are, are going to make the boat stern heavy. If you're putting a low HP outboard on it (5 or less) it doesn't really matter too much.

Some food for thought... Thompson's is old-tech, but better than nothing. I've used it, but it dries out and requires maintenance to keep things waterproof. If you can find Jasco Termin-8 waterbased, it will treat the wood to keep it from rotting, and completely dry. Termin-8 oil based stings to high heaven and takes a long time to dry (I wouldn't recommend). I'd use spar urethane or Rustoleum over Thompsons, but if used on doug-fir plywood, the plywood will check over time,,, and then water can get in and rot the plywood. Epoxy is the best to encapsulate the wood, but kind of spendy. Lots of choices.....

using the rule of thumb of lenght x width / 15 we get about 600 # capacity of people, motor, and gear. there is 400# of people, so there is 200 left for everything else.

adding plywood, a live well, etc. will be overloaded.

Hey Nate,

Got any pix of the bottom of the hull?

Your live well's only 3gals +/- of water? Hopefully none of it matters though.............. Probably going to have LOTS of room & weight capacity....
