Has anybody tried Alcoa gutter sealer to seal the rivits? I have used this product for years on gutters and it is nearly impervious to leaking and uv damage. I never had a call-back for leaks.

The closed end blind rivets are self sealing and vapor and waterproof.

I'm sure the gutter seal is great for gutters, but gutters aren't subjected to the same stresses boats are. There are other products that are tried and true used for sealing rivets and seams like Gluvit and Coat-it.

Re: Aluminum Closed end rivets for aluminum hull repair

Hey guys...wanted to jump on this one... I see alot of talk about the heavy duty rivet gun... I just purchased one of those hand rivet guns... the $10 kit from harbor freight.. Is that gun going to be sufficient to put in the 1/8" rivets into to bottom of my boat?

I have a majority of the rivets passing through the ribs, so there are two sheets that I need to get the rivet through...

thx.

The little one handed regular duty setting tool will set up to a 3/16" diameter rivet, the heavy duty setting tool will set the smaller diameters and 1/4" diameter rivets too.

You need to measure the diameter of the rivets you remove carefully, I suspect they're 3/16" instead of 1/8".

Setting a 3/16" dia. closed end rivet with the regular duty tool can be challenging unless you have a grip like Hulk Hogan. The heavy duty setting tool makes setting these rivets much easier.

You can set the rivets with a hand gun if your strong enough. Use both hands. Even 3/16 though I have never tried 1/4. 3/16 all SS are a bear but 3/16 all AL aren't to bad and I'm old. If your really doing 1/8 they are easy.

I should mention that I have an air powered riveter but use the hand riviter fairly often as i can't always get the powered one in some of the places I need a rivet.

The mandrel of the 1/4" dia. rivets won't fit in the regular duty setting tool.

I haven't set any 3/16" all aluminum closed end rivets with the regular tool, but the 3/16" closed end with the steel mandrel are tough... probably like the SS.

I know this question has been beaten to death, but should I get Alum/Steel rivets, or Alum/Alum?

Seems like Alum/Steel create better seals?

I don't like using steel anywhere on an AL boat. Having said that steel might be a little stronger. I would still use alum/alum.

I use the aluminum rivets with the steel mandrel because they're the strongest and have the best seal. The amount of steel left behind when the mandrel pops off is minimal, about the size of a BB. A dab of epoxy or marine sealant over the mandrel hole will prevent any corrosion if you're worried about that.
