Getting ready to install my outdrive and have been reading up on glueing in the large round gasket that seals off the bellows. The manual doesn’t mention where the adhesive should go. Do I put it on the “front” face of the gasket facing the bellows or around the sides of the gasket or both? Not exactly sure in which the direction the gasket seals thing and don’t want adhesive messing with the seal

Ayuh,....... The glue is just to hold the o-ring in place, while you stab the drive on,.....

I use a glob of grease, rather than glue, myself,.....

I use a small drop of bellows adhesive at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions on the o.d. of the quad ring

As stated this is to merely hold the ring in place, not aid in sealing. Too much adhesive can cause issues with fit/sealing plus makes cleanup at service more difficult

Grease is fine to use but if your are strictly freshwater there's no need for it

Thanks all for your input. I am curious in which direction the drive applies pressure to seal the housing; forward against the aluminum ring or outward against the walls of the bell housing?

I use Permatex High Tack. I brush it along the surface where the oring lays. Easy clean up with acetone and a paper towel. I'm sure some gets on the aluminum ring also. As stated above, your job is just to make sure the oring stays in place during drive insert, as far as pressures in which direction I trust the engineers have done their job.
