You can take the drive off without draining the oil, but you will lose a little bit of it for sure.
Either way...it’s not a terribly expensive thing anyway.
If it’s the alpha of the later type...remember and undo the header tank pipe work before removing it. Otherwise you will break the fitting. Quite a common mistake.
