Alpha one gen2 shift shaft loose?

Like many others I attempted to service my impeller and messes up the shift position. (I turned the prop) I did manage to get it lined up and shift F-N-R but I noticed the shift shaft in the lower moves freely up and down and now it has a loud clunk. In the up position it shifts and stays in gear but it eventually works it way down and slips out of gear and starts chattering. Did I break the shaft? Is there a retainer in the lower I broke? Pleas help!

That is for an mc1/r/mr/alpha one

OP states is gen 2, no washer needed.
