Hi All

I am trying to press in the upper unit lower water seat for the lower unit shaft to sit in.... Number 12 on the drawing.

I've already ruined one new seal as it didn't go in straight and bent, I don't want to ruin another! I am going to out it in the freezer. but is there anything else I can do to make sure it goes in straight?

I also read a post saying 'forget about it, just stuff some rtv in there and be done with it', I don't want to do that, but may have to as a last resort if I can't get this seal in....although I don't see how rtv would seal against a rotating shaft!

Thanks

try a socket of the correct size, install an extention backwards and use it as a driver to seat it flush IT IS NOT RECESSED

I had a new seal arrive today, a slightly different one, this one is stamped 0.875 1.375 0.250, went in a hell of a lot easier than the one I tried yesterday!

I think it's exactly the same as used in a alpha gen 2 which is good to know....phew all sorted!

Now I just have to hope my bellhousing seals to the right of the shift cable, it was badly corroded so have filled it with some bigboy metal filler and made it level etc.....may have to use a smear of permatex no.3 to be safe!

No ther gen II installs from the top down ,
The Alpha1 lists 26-96503, Sierra 18-2058 size listed as .885, .1.381, .251
trusted what i saw on the web instead of the manual

That's what I installed..... 0.875 1.375 0.250.....

Which I thought was the same as a gen 2 as both the lower most seals on a gen 2 are the same? Gen 1 has a larger 2nd oil seal above that one.....

Thanks, so the one I have fitted has a slightly smaller O.D and I.D, hopefully 0.01'' smaller I.D will be fine!

I'm about to do the same job tomorrow.
I'm confused by your post. Is 26-96503 the right part for the gen 1?
Also, the gen 1 installs from the bottom, right? And I'm seeing conflicting opinions online. Some are saying the spring should face down. Others are saying it should face up. Any ideas?

Bt doctur has listed the correct size for a gen 1....the seal I have put in is for a gen 2, however I think it will work as the dimensions are pretty close.

I think it's spring toward the female drive coupler, so spring facing up towards the top cap with 4 bolts, that will be facing down when you're driving it in.... Yes, gen 1 goes in from the bottom
