Hello guys. I have a bayliner Capri 2052 (I believe) with a Mercruiser 5.7 350 & Alpha One leg.

The engine block is cracked and takes on water in the engine so I need to swap it out. I've got my eye on a truck engine (also 350) but would like to verify everything swaps over and how to pull the engine. here are some questions

1. how do I remove the out drive from the engine so I can pull it?

2. what gaskets and parts will i need to replace while I am going through the engine?

3. what is the procedure to pulling the engine?

4. what parts can I keep off the truck engine and what marine parts must I need to keep?

5. any tips and tricks while I'm pulling out all the lines/linkages?

will provide photos throughout the whole process

any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

Ayuh,..... #1,... the 6 nuts, 'n the trim rams are what holds the drive on,.... there's a gasket set for puttin' it back on,...

#2,... Ya alota gaskets,....

#3,... Disconnect the plumbin', the wirin', exhaust, pull the 2 big bolts in the rear motor mounts, 'n the lags outa the front mounts, 'n lift straight up, 'n out,....

#4,.... The Long Block, Only,...
Everything 'tween the Long Block configuration, to the Bobtail marine drop-in motor is the stuff ya need off yer old motor,....

#5,.... Take pictures,.... digital photography is cheap,....

Bondo answered your questions. One other thing to bring up is the years of the engines. There have been changes. If they are the same era it should be an easy swap but you will want to switch the core plugs to brass.

wait what ? they are both Chevy long block 350s...?

Ayuh,.... There's been a few subtle changes since the SBC was born in the '50s,......

One of those was the intro of Vortec heads in '96,.....

You could get yer ole heads rebuilt, 'n put 'em on the '92, to match up yer current motor,....

my understanding when talking to my mechanic is that these engines are the same and will swap over.

how can I verify ?

The TBI doesn't matter. How many bolts are holding the intake on? If your current motor (likely) has 8 it is Vortec. The 92 will not be and will have 12. It is possible to swap the heads and intake over but you could also just look for a Vortec motor to keep it easier.

One small caution to add to above. I just did the exact same swap on my 1997 5.7L EFI. If your running the mercruiser TBI (EFI), it runs without an O2 sensor (Known as open loop). I considered moving to vortec heads, but I was wary of swapping out the intake manifold (As you would have to if you want to either add or remove vortec heads). Without an O2 sensor, (Or remapping the EFI computer) it's possible that making major changes on the intake side of things may result in a lean or rich condition. I didn't test this thought, but if someone knows if this is an issue in reality, I'd also love to know.

Cheers,

Mat

You have a Tbi set up. It may be a roller motor. The 92 will be a roller block but not likely have a roller cam if it came out of a truck. Other then that they are identical..and an easy swap..

You will have to swap over the coupler but the engines are basically the same otherwise. Make sure you change the core plugs to brass.

You need to use the flywheel and coupler from your 96 block. If the block you are going to use was 1985 and older then it would be a problem. But since it's 92 it's basically the same block you've got now. Mabe not crazy just confused lol..
