Aligning coupler and drive shaft splines.

Damn, didn't notice all these posts on page 2 last night.

Thanks all, those were my intentions to bump the starter first without spark and see if it binds. And yes, I did check the alignment. However, I may have the proper socket for the cap and I'll try to look see if the bearings are ok before moving forward.

BT Doctur, I did hear some grumbling last year at idle and thought it may have been the gimble which prompted me to replace it. As mentioned the oil came out clean so I can't see why it would be rusted.


Again, thanks for all the input. My first full year as a boater and with a used stern drive it causes quite a bit of anxiety!

Checking back in. Pulled the cap and sure enough there was a little rust but I had no problem cleaning and spinning the bearing as I did so. Not sure if it was enough to bind it on me. Filled her with gear lube and tested some more. Fired her up no problem, cep't the leaks from my new exhaust manifold which were quickly remedied. Put her in drive and it seemed to be spinning fine (no prop).
