As an airport skycap checked through a customer at curbside, he accidentally knocked over the man's luggage. He quickly collected the fallen bags and apologized for the mishap. Unappeased, the traveler burst into an angry tirade, raging and swearing at the skycap for his clumsiness. Throughout the traveler's rant, the baggage handler simply apologized and smiled. The angry man continued to berate the skycap, until he finally headed off to catch his plane. Even then the baggage handler remained calm and passively smiled.

The next customer in line witnessed the incident and marveled at the skycap's professionalism and control. "I have never seen such restraint and humility," he said. "How do you keep your cool when somebody is attacking you so viciously?"

"It's easy," the skycap answered. "He's going to Denver, but his bags are going to Detroit."

I'm sure it could happen....just as plausible as the guy behind the counter spitting in your drink or on your burger.

Well, according to American airlines, 99.2 percent of the time that's false. They claim 99.2 percent of the bags get where they are supposed to go, when they are supposed to get there. Pretty impressive considering the volume of luggage they deal with on a daily basis.

I work at an airport, around the airlines and I can assure you, the ground handlers do their best to ensure your stuff gets where it's supposed to go. Just understand after they stick it on the plane and shut the door, it's out of their hands.

If I worked for an airlines and some jerk was hassling me... I question whether or not I would do my best to ensure he had a nice day.

Years ago, I had a job at a call center and when someone was exceptionally obnoxious I would give them a courtesy hold. Usually about three minutes. That's a lifetime on hold. If they were still a jerk when I came back, I'd give them another courtesy hold. Each hold was progressively longer. It was only a matter of time until it took the fight out of them.

I'll tell you what.....I give the skycaps the biggest tips of anybody when I go on a trip. And I've never had a piece of luggage lost (yet). May be just dumb luck, but.....
