Christmas summer school holidays here.
Young Hayden has complained for months about not going 'away' for holidays.
Tells us most of the class went to Paris and the Eifel Tower, and the rest all went on cruises last holidays....1 or 2 did but you know kids.

We are guilty of not having holidays, so Anita decides to send him to her cousin in Christchurch, New Zealand, for 2 weeks, so he can meet all his Kiwi family (he is a Queenslander) and his Nana.

As he is 15 he has to travel as an UM (unaccompanied minor), and we don't use the budget airlines, so he ends up going both ways on Air New Zealand.
He gets home tonight, and his highlights were his flights.

This is how I remember his conversation.

"I don't want to grow up. I want to travel as an UM always.
When you go to check in, they called up a air hostess, and oh-boy Dad, you should see her. WOW, was she hot.
She takes me thru everything, and even when I asked to go to the toilet at the terminal, she got a man hostess to accompany me while she waited outside.
She put me on the plane first and waited with me till take off, and always came back to me. I got my meal first. Everything. When it was queit she would sit next to me and talk.
Then when we landed, she took me off first, and when we got to luggage she rang someone and my bag was delivered to us, even before the other passengers got in.
She took me right out to Aunt, who had to sign for me. She was really nice.
On the way back it was better still.
In flight this lady hostess whispered in my ear...'do you know there are only 4 Aussies on this flight....you me and and pilots'.
She was really cute.
I got a surprise. Before we boarded this male hostess came up to her and said "you better watch this one, he's big trouble". He was the one that take me to the toilet in Australia 2 weeks back. I saw him wink to her.

He tells us he had a good holiday.
I wish I travelled as an UM when I was 15, but then again, if I can hang on long enough, I might get the same services at the other end of life.

Cheers
Phillip

Re: Air Travel as an UM

Back in the 30s and 40s my brother, sister and I traveled by Pullman coach on the Seaboard railroad "Palmland" back and forth from NC to NJ to summer with our father.

Pullman porters were every bit the great chaperones that the ANZ Hostesses seem to be.
