Hello!

I am new to this forum, but not new to boating. At least, in the smaller, inflatable types. I have been boating since I was little, but nothing with anything more than some oars or a trolling motor to fish. So, you could call me a bit of a "newbie" when it comes to power boats.

The question I have: I have been looking for almost a year for a boat that is big enough to fit the wife and 3 kids for some summer fun, but not too big to tow to some smaller local lakes. I had a budged of 5k, but was recently "convinced" by the wife that we need a new bed. There goes 1500......but, I do have to admit.....we need a new bed. Anyway, back on subject. We want something along the lines of a bow rider that the kids can enjoy, maybe even be able to pull a tube, but is small enough that we can take to the local lakes and not kill us in operating costs.

I have found no less than a half dozen on Craigslist, but I am a bit nervous about that. I know I can hire a marine surveyor, but I just don't have the $$ to hire one to inspect every boat out there. I did some research, I gained some knowledge on what to look out for, but I want to make the best decision possible.

I received a call from a local dealer who has a boat that he says would be perfect for what I am looking for, but it seems to be a bit overpriced..... hence the question.....need some advise.

I am more willing to buy from a dealer than somebody who is selling their yard ornament that has been sitting for two years...if you catch my drift.

Attached is some pics of the 1981 Sea Spirit......they are asking 1900 for it and state the engine runs great and has no pressing issues.......trailer included....

So the question is.....buy???

Like I said, I have been watching the adds for about a year now......and I just feel more comfortable putting my hard earned cash towards a dealer......

Please straighten me out if I need it!!

Joshua

Re: Advise please!

hi josh....welcome to iboats...

that is a lof of money for that boat. about 800 over priced.

besides the motor.....(wich should be more than likely good.)
the boat is the type and era that hull rot is an issue.
you need to look for rotten floor boards....any soft spots... in both the transom and the floor.....pay particular attention to the area between the windsheild.

Welcome on Josh! Oops is the master of glass, so go with his call on that boat. I agree too ... overpriced.

Set your budget at $3k leaving about $500 to deal with your first round of "uh, oh's." Don't be afraid of a private sale on boats, just be careful. Wood (floor, transom & stringers) is a key place you want to watch for rot - which is your biggest enemy. And then your drive system will be a key.

Personally, for a first family boat: I'd suggest an outboard bowrider between 16' and 18'. We do a family of 5 + dogs on an 18' reasonably comfortable and efficient. Look at condition of the boat, type and condition of the drive system and how well the seller knows the boat (get an idea if they took care of it).

$3k should buy you a reasonably nice, lake ready boat right now.

I agree with oops, on the windshield area, becuase if you look, its not closed all the way. Generally that indicates something moved, floors, or something in that area. Looking at the inside, it looks like it has not been taken care of to well, wires, missing seat, and looks like its been out in the weather alot too. Most likely rot under floor, if not the floor in areas. I think I would pass on that one, just my .0002.

Re: Advise please!

Salty, First of all you have chosen the right style of boat, IMHO. Bowriders are real kid-friendly and have about the most seating avail for a particular sized boat. That boat is pretty well used. Definately check for soft floor areas. The motor is an inline 6 Merc, which is a proven design, but not manufactured for a while now. Parts are avail everywhere.

The price you got from the dealer is about as low as you will get for anything that runs and doesn't just sink. A lower price might be avail from a private sale. Since you are a newbie, you might consider getting a better boat, so it will work properly while you learn the ropes of motor and boat maintenance.

Looks weathered inside and there are signs things have been rigged because they no longer can hold onto the deteriorating deck, and the substructure must be considered high risk for rot.

HI Salty Blood. Welcome to iboats. I agree that you should be able to find a nice family boat (probably with a motor and trailer) for under $1000, and bowriders are great for kids. They love sitting up there Titanic style. The key to finding the best boat for your needs is patience. The deals are out there, you just gotta be persistent and patient. Here's a sweet deal someone posted the other day. It's about 1000 miles too far away for me, but if I was closer I'd be on it like white on rice.

Hard to tell, with a cover on. If the inside floors and are solid and dry, possibile. Dont know the outdrive, the 120hp were good motors, but on a 19.5ft, might be a bit under powered.

Ok, I will have to ask him how she runs with the 120. I'm meeting with the owner tomorrow. I'll post some pics / info after.

Thanks again for all the advise! I don't personally know any boaters so it is nice to get some help on this.

Took a look at the 86' Renken Bowrider this evening. Although I am not too experienced, I think it may be a good buy. New seats, starter, an some other stuff. Also comes with trailer, fish finder, and some misc. fishing equipment. Seats are new, but the interior sides are a bit faded. No soft spots in the floor and the windshield and console looks good.

Let me know what you guys think....

Re: Advise please!

OMC = Obsolete.

parts can be had...but they are (imho) not worth the trouble.

merc alpha or volvo is readily avalable and can be worked on by any reputable shop.....or your self if you read enough here.

i know i just irked some of the guys here on the forum that love them.....but the truth it when guys that buy old boats to restore....they throw the omcs away and re power with the merc set ups.

we have several omc- merc conversions underway right now in the dry dock......very spendy.
....if you are buying a new to you boat.....why start with a disadvantage?

So, if I understand this correctly, it may be an OK boat, but there is the potential that if something breaks in the motor, it could lead to a big headache?

How about the reliability of those motors? If I were to put $500 into it in tune-up, etc., maybe, just maybe, I could get a year or two out or her?? I would be ok with that for my first power boat.....

I have been watching the ads for some time now, maybe last summer, and I just can't find something over 16', not destroyed by neglect, comes with trailer, and all for under 2 g's.

Would hate to lose another summer, but I do understand the wisdom of waiting for the right one......I'm just getting impatient.....
