A few years ago I purchased a 96 mariner 9.9 as a gift for my dad. He used it once, put it away in the garage and left it there. Except or the fact that it was upright, its a pretty much worst case storage scenario- no winterization etc.
After opening my big mouth and saying I could get it going, (couple of years in college worked at a hardware store fixing lawnmowers) I got the motor back from him. Here's what's happening.
After changing the oil, cleaning the plugs and putting it on the bench it will run for a few seconds and then quit. Figuring the carb was all gummed up, i took it apart and cleaned it out thouroghly. There were some deposits in the bowl but overall not too bad. I checked for fuel restrictions to the fuel pump, found none and put it all back together. I'm still getting the same results, a few seconds of run time then nothing. It will only restart if I open the throttle all the way and return it to the start position beore I pull the cord. If i work the throttle back and forth when running,, i can keep it running for a few more seconds but not much. My hunch tells me that its a fuel problem but Im not convinced its the fuel pump for its pumping when I disconnect the line and turn the motor over. There's a little electric plunger on top of the carb which may be an electric choke but i'm not sure. There are no other ways to choke this unit so I'm thinking the issue is its not getting enough fuel when cold due to this electric plunger not working correctly.
What do you think? Am I on the right path? I dont have any manuals and would feel better about the project If i could fix it myself and return it to dad. It would be embarrasing to bring it to a repair shop and giving dad the bill is not an option. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and great forum btw.
