still not sure on exact location I need to tap. If you look at post #36 you'll see the areas I believe you were referring to. I have a separate thread going to verify water flow through the power head. The area in question is also smaller than than the first site I was going to use so I may need to get a smaller ell.

To have any hope of getting a reasonable consistent 'pee', you need to tap in BEFORE the thermostat.
Either you tap into the block/exhaust cover or use the by-pass hole in the thermostat housing we have indicated.Wherever you tap in this engine it will not be as strong as on the newer engines with pressure valves and higher capacity pumps. If not mistaken, the threads in the 'original' one is 1/4 NPTF.

I understand that. I've got it figured out now (I think). I'll be drilling and tapping for the ell at the location indicated in the pics below based on the water flow shown. I currently have a 1/4" Nylon ell, but it's too big, so I'll need to get an 1/8" version. I also need to build up the topside of the the T-stat cover with some JB weld to ensure the threads in the ell have plenty to bite into. Thanks again.

WHEW!!!! Well after much fiddling and diddling, I FINALLY got this silly little project finished. The job itself was actually pretty easy, but getting all the little bits was sort of a pain. To recap, I decided to add a tell tale/ pee stream to the old '66 20 hp using the method shown in the link below for a 6 hp of similar vintage.

http://www.leeroysramblings.com/OMC_6hp.htm

I was able to get all of the pieces at ACE hardware, albeit more trips than I'd care to admit. I eventually found a quick connect, 1/4" OD to 1/8" 90 degree, nylon elbow, but it had very fine threads which took me forever to determine. I eventually discovered it was metric and used an M10 x 1.00 thread count. Because it was so odd, I used a 1/4" diameter bolt of the same thread count to tap the threads into the softer aluminum t-stat housing. I then wrapped the threads of the elbow in teflon tape and installed it, and to my surprise it actually worked and fit snugly!!! I used some 1/8" white plastic hosing that I also got from ACE for about $.20 a foot to install it into the quick connect fitting and through an enlarged stock drain hole in the lower cowling. I also added a small rubber grommet to hold the hose in place and prevent chafing. Once I got all the bit together, the job itself was pretty quick and easy. Just take the time to drill and tap the cover carefully. I used a donor t-stat cover, so I can always replace the stock cover if need be. After I got it all put together I filled my trusty "test tank" (aka trash can), crossed my fingers and started her up and to my surprise out came a healthy stream of water !!!!! IT WORKS! Not only is the "pee stream" itself strong, even in a test tank, but there is still plenty of water coming out or the normal exhaust port, although it doesn't show up in my cell phone pics. It should be even better on the open water. I let it idle for 5-10 min in between torrential downpours here today and all went well. I'll post a further update once I get a chance to run WOT for a while. In the mean time enjoy the pics. I hope they can be of use to others in the future. 10000 thanks to everyone for letting me ask questions. It was a fun, surprisingly easy project that will give me an extra layer of piece of mind while out on the water, and save me from having to crane my neck around to the back of the motor to check that all is well. Thanks again!!!

Proof it actually works :) ! You can't see it in these crummy cell phone pics, but there is water coming out of both the tell tale and regular exhaust port.

Update: Here are some better pics of water coming out of the new tell tale as well as the old/stock exhaust port.

Re: Update: Adding a tell tale to a '66 20 hp--COMPLETED!!!!

UPDATE: After taking the boat on a recent trip with the new tell tale, I've decided to go back to the original stock configuration. While the mod does work inasmuch as it will divert water outside to cowl for visual verification, I believe it starves the motor of too much cooling water. I suppose I could add a reducer to the end of the 1/8" hose to covert it to 1/16", but then the stream would be tool small to see and may still lead to an unintended overheat. Oh well, live and learn. It would probably be ok on a smaller hp motor, but on my old 20 hp 2-stroke Johnson, I think it starves the motor of too much water. I almost had a near overheat of my own. Thankfully, I had my original t-stat cover with me and I put it on and motored home without issue. Just thought I'd give an update for any folks who way think of doing a similar mod in the future. Thanks.
