Re: Adding a tell tale to a '66 20 hp

ah ha. So does that mean I need to put it on the power head some where, like in the link below near the bottom, or just in a different location in the t-stat cover? If it involves tapping into the motor, I may pass. That scares me :)

Reread post # 17, that is where I installed mine.

Yes, if you lay the gasket on the cover there should be a small hole that will align with your dot. Use the gasket as a guide and drill the hole for the elbow in that spot.

.....here's what is beneath this same spot on the motor's power head.

.....Here's a spare t-stat gasket I happen to have. It doesn't have a hole in it, but I think I get what you're saying. I need to tap through the spot highlighted in post #23, then the gasket in the indicated area and then into the water passage indicated in post #25.

OK, your gasket doesn't have a hole in it. If you remove the gasket you will see a water passage going strait down into the cylinder head, if you mount your elbow over that passage it will get water from the pump before the thermostat. I will see if I can find a part number for a gasket with a hole in it for you.

Just tap a hole in the top of the waterjacket above the top cylinder.

If not mistaken, under the gasket is an air bleed/by-pass hole. When thermostat is closed, some water bypasses the thermostat bleeding air out of the system and at the same time keeps some water circulation even if thermostat is closed. This is in general the same that is obtained when using the later introduced pee-outlet. You may just make a hole in the gasket and install the nipple just above, but the pressure might not be much. It will all depend how well the thermostat rubber gasket 'covers' the passage out.

That's it, make the hole in the gasket as close to the size of the passage as you can. Drill and tap the elbow over the top of the passage. Still trying to find a part number for a gasket with a hole already in it, no luck so far.

Thanks again guys. I think the red arrow is pointing to the area Haffiman is referring to and the yellow one is pointing to the one Daviet is talking about.

I am going to have to look at a manual for your engine and check the cooling flow, I was thinking of the same place as Haffiman, where the red arrow is, isn't there a passage going strait down the cylinder head?

Just note that there are some differences between the various polymers that are used for fittings (ABS, nylon, HDPE, PVC, etc.). What you have may be just fine, but be sure that it is rated for the temps that are found under your cowl.

There are no ready made gaskets with hole at that place.

Here are some pics directly below the area Haffiman suggested.

The first two pics make it look like there is a water passage into the head. (I think)

Will do. I'd like to find a brass ell fitting, if at all possible, but first I gotta make sure I put it in the right spot. LOL
