I am new to outboard motors and I have picked up a 1972 6hp Johnson for my home built mini pontoon project. I know this motor uses points and I want to add a kill switch. I am looking for detailed instructions on how to do this. I followed one thread that said one wire to each set of points from the switch but I would like know if this is the correct way to accomplish this without hurting anything.

AMazon also sells nice compact wireless switches that you could use to kill the engine remotely....or you can bring the switch up near the steering but.... those wires carry strong coil kickbacks voltages when the points open up.... best to keep the wires short

with some 12v DC you could install the relay/receiver at the back close to the engine & by using the N.O. contacts at the push of the button the engine would shut down :)

come to think of it don't worry about long wires to a front mounted kill switch.... that is how front mounted ignition switches work anyway.

they short the 2 M posts :)
