Re: Accessory wiring & Guages

Well guys tomorrow I am going to start wiring some of the basic componants like the nav light, pole light, a horn, and the volt meter. Any last minute advice?

** I also need to know what the triangle symbol with the line above it on the switch near the guages means? Is that some kind of resistor? Please specify exactly what part I need to buy.

Schematic

Any word on those guages you mentioned earlier?

Hi:
The gauges go on sale on the 13th. I'll go see them then. Good news!!! You can order them direct. It'll only cost around $15.00 CAN UPS for shipping so it's still practical. I'll keep you posted on their quality.
The device in the diagram is a diode. The existing switch you have (SPDT) relies on the diode to allow 'all lights on' in one position, and 'pole light only' in the other. We can use the original diode if its still good, or we can do away with it by replacing the switch with a slightly more complex one. If it were myself, I'd lose the diode and replace the switch.(but I'm fussy)
Can't finish the diagram until we settle on gauges...........My last minute advice is.....wait till I check out the gauges. I know the voltmeter is sweet, its the temp I have to see....
You may be able to remove the water from the gages by placing the meter in plastic bag and tapeing the opening to a vacumn cleaner hose, warm bag with hot air from vacumn cleaner. Saved a cell phone with this method, that I dropped in water,

clanton:
do recognize this tach? do you think its an ignition tach, or a limited alt tach? it has 1-2-3-4 on the back for positions.

Re: Accessory wiring & Guages

yo jm:
This item appears to be a crude rev limiter which grounds out one cylinders mag in the event of an overspeed. (Vacuum Cutout Switch)
vacuum.jpg
If you take a few more pictures all around your engine so we can determine your exact ignition type, we may be able to hook your existing tach to the above terminal on the vacuum cutout switch. Probably would be a good idea to remove tach (label original wires) and as clanton suggests, dry it out first. Might as well do the speedo at the same time.(again label wires for reference)

Re: Accessory wiring & Guages

I have uploaded all the pictures of the motor, guages, and boat that I have to http://www.digitaldatanet.net/boat/
The pics labeled eng**.jpg are engine pics from all angels. Take a look, any ideas would be appreciated. Also please tell me if the motor has an altanator on it. If it doesnt how do I keep the battery charged?

Re: Accessory wiring & Guages

Hi guys, looks like old age may have some of the answers on this one. That appears to be a prealternator motor. These early motors could be equipped with a generator, driven from a "Gilmer" belt running off that top geared flywheel area. Many were sold to folks who just charged the battery in between uses. The motor only used the battery for starting. The problem for JM becomes two-fold, any electrical use will depleat the battery charge and the tach issue will require a magneto type instrument.
I believe mine was an "Aquameter".

Hope this helps. I can remember many fun-filled hours with those ole Johnrudes.

John:
Before you spend any money on this outfit, we better determine if in fact it has a charging system. As Tarpon Bob says, some may have not been equipted with a charging system.
> Measure voltage at battery and record
> start and run engine at a high idle
> measure voltage while running and record

does it increase with engine running?

1963 40 hp had flywheel mag ignition, The charging system was DC gen, only on some models. What is model and serial number? Look for round plug on top rear of engine.

Re: Accessory wiring & Guages

Here are some more pics of the wires you asked me to trace.

The black wire comes out of the electrical box, across up the side of the engine, under the fly wheel and down the other side to connect.

The yellow wire starts under the fly wheel croses the engine, goes down the other side to connect.

In the pics at the link below I have highlighted the wires in question to make them easier to follow.

More pics at http://www.digitaldatanet.net/boat/more/

John.......I have bad news.

I don't think we have a charging system....i can't see it being worth bolting on a generator...
:( :( :( :( :(

I guess you could install a large capacity battery (or 2 in parallel) and charge them at the end of each use.

What do you think?

Hey JM, Check out Ebay # 1032986404 and item # 1032984117. I think these items include the
bracket, gerator and belt. The all you need is a regulator and schematic.
:)
