A hole in my boat

I bought a 1981 MAcGregor 25 sailboat that was equipped with a depth/fish finder, but was delivered to me without it. The seller has already disposed of the unit, and what's left is a hole in my boat where a thru-hull transducer used to be. How can I best repair the hole or at least safely and reliably plug the now missing transducer?

Thanks!

why is there a hole if it was a thru-hull transducer?

Um, because it was a THRU THE HULL transducer, Shizzy!
I'll bet you're thinkng of the more-common "shoot-thru" transducer...

To answer the question- it might be possible to buy a new depthfinder with a transducer that uses the same size hole. If you're not comfortable installng it below the waterline you might consider having it done for you.

thats exactly wht I was thinking. "Thru-hull" was mentioned not "through-THE-Hull"

I have always heard them called either a High speed transducer (mounts on the transom) or thru hull transducer which mounts inside the boat.

the through hull transducers are pricey but the are way mor accurate than transom mount I would just replace it most use the same size hole.

or you could use the hole to install a through hull water pick up (ball valve) and install yourself a raw water washdown pump.

Nope, Thru-hull is just that, big ol' hole drilled directly through the bottom of the hull where the X-ducer mounts. Kind of looks like a thru-hull fitting for a bilge pump,,, except it's filled with sonar goodies and wires coming out of it.

If the PO removed the depth finder, why not just install another one? Seems in this day and age that a depth finder / fish finder is common place on boats. Sounds like the best way to fix the problem is to put back in there, what came out.

Especially with a sailboat, you are going to want to keep an eye on the depth. It has to be annoying when the keel starts to drag. At least you can raise it on your boat.

well done

not that it matters any but i'm with the thru-hull means no holes crowd.

i'm also along for the use it again for your new equip ride.

however to add something, i like thru-hulls better cuz there's no jacking with the puck hitting trailer bunks or wires hanging off the transom.
