I have a 76 Seacraft where they glued carpet on the inside gunnels. The carpet is rotting away. What is the easiest way to get the contact cement off the fiberglass without destroying the fiberglass? I have used acetone but afraid of damaging the fiberglass.

Second question. What is the easiest way to mount the bilge pump at the bottom of the bilge? Do I glue it or epoxy the base to the bottom? The previous owner use five 3? washers and zip tied them to the bottom of the pump to keep it in place.

Re: A few basic repair 101 questions

I mounted the bilge pump to a block of hardwood with screws and then glued the block down with PL premium, similar to liquid nails. Epoxy would be ok, the screws make it easy to remove in future.

Don't know about carpet removal, never had any in my boats.
You might ask at home depot for a contact cement remover.

Seacrafts are great boats, well worth restoring, they hold value like whalers.
