Even tho they changed the guidelines, there is still no wrong way to go about it. One way is just better than another. The worst thing a person can do, is to do nothing.....

If I need CPR, send the guy who does it "Better" please.

Sorry, sir, you don't know the new guidelines and are not doing it the best way. I'm going to lie here and wait for the guy that does it "better".:)

I really do not think that it is all that new info, the red cross probably was just a little slow spreading the word.

I new this info for about a year and a half. :)

either way is fine for me.

Its only gonna save what? 20 seconds.
And since I was probably laying there 10 minutes before anyone found me....why bother. I recently read that cpr has only a 5-7% success rate anyway. If its my time, let me go.

Drowned Rat... thank you. I just had to re-new my CPR and First Aid cards and this was not explained..... so for me this is NEWS...

The information he provided is great. By all means, if a person knows of both procedures, use the most current.

A couple of us are just ribbin' him a little on his other statement: :)

Wow, sensitive subject.

Anyway, there are right ways, wrong ways and the best way. For professional rescuers the best way is the only way, that's all I was saying. Lol

In addition, underlying changes like this one, is an effort to make it more likely lay rescuers will attempt something rather than nothing at all. Since most people have little or no aversion to chest compressions, but may have a HUGE problem with the ventilation part, teaching that chest compressions alone have nearly the same value (pre ALS) as doing both chest compressions and ventilations encourages people to "try" who might otherwise turn their heads and walk away.

Anyway, the CAB method has a better success rate, in and out of hospital, so why argue about that? There is 30 years of data to back it up.

One of the indications for still doing the airway first is drowning. Chest compressions first is for cardiac arrest. Since this is a water related forum, coming across a drowning victim is more likely than for the average person.

Just chest compression, no mouth to mouth.

This is going to be a life saver for a lot of street people.:D

On another note. My wife suffers from atrial fibrillation. (AFIB) Landed in the hopsital once with congestive heart failure before we realized it.

Now, when the ticker is acting up, I wrap her up from behind and give her a quick squeeze/compression, usually enough so her back cracks a little. Put's the heart in rythm pronto. All is good.

Nice JM, It's like whacking the side of the ole-settop when the reception gets hairy :)

Amen !!!!! Perfectly said.

I am a Red Cross CPR and First Aid Instructor and I hope this news connects with people who do not have any formal instruction. Maybe they will be more likely to respond to an emergency knowing that anyone can do this.

I'm not sure how the Good Samaratin Act will play out if they responder dosen't get consent however. That is one part of training thats important to know.

Re: A-B-C's for CPR no more.

And in another 2 - 4 years the AHA will change the guidlines again ... seems that the new "Person in Charge" always has to put their stamp on things. I do like the new method over the latest old method, however, and I do think it will help the "untrained" in giving CPR. Every time I re-cert it is different and we are told "You have to learn it and test on it this way, but in 2 weeks we will be using different recert criteria and this is what you will need to know!

Sometimes it can be quite confusing for this simple mind! I like the KISS method, "Keep It Simple, Stupid!"

I had a first aid refresher last year... the one thing I remember being told was the frequency of giving chest compressions is the same as the beat from "another one bites the dust" by queen, wont forget that in a hurray. (or "row row your boat" but just doesnt have the irony)

Also, "Staying Alive" by the Bee Gees.

How's that for fitting? :)

But I like "Another One Bites the Dust" better because that's usually what happens.

I'll second that ... hate it when we are called for a "CPR in progress ..." call. Those usually don't end well.:(

LOL, yes. Either that or they're sitting up and talking to you when you get there.
