Check all your connections first. You can check continuity with a volt/ohm meter. an extra pair of hands would be helpful.

Check your kill switch, ignition and neutral safety switch.

I'd go for the neutral safety switch first.

Kill switches have nothing to do with cranking the engine. It kills the ignition -- not the starer circuit. Jump the solenoid. If the engine spins you have an ignition switch, solenoid, or wiring issue.

I was covering the options, some people come on here and say it does nothing, and it means it won't turn over, and others say the same thing and it will turn over and not start.

can you turn on the gauge lights??? do you have systems check ?? if so does the tach go through its sequence checks?? if not you might not have power TO THE switch.

I like silvertips idea of jumping the solenoid to see if it even works as a first step... then go from there depending on what happens...check that you have 12 volts at the starter.

a bad nuetral switch will not allow power to the starter...( wont let the starter crank over)

what motor are we working on?

what controls??

Re: 99 johnson wont start please help!

did you find the fuse?? its under the cowl on top of the motor right behind the lifting eye -it looks like a rubber bump in the wire i believe the wire its on is either purple or red ... its kind of a small wire like 14ga
fuse holder is only about an inch long all together and it doesnt look like a fuse holder.... mines got a stainless steel wire retainer on it inside is a TINY fuse that you about have to have a magnifying glas to tell if its blown -it MOST PROBABLY IS

I am thinking his year motor has twin blade fuses. and that the holder is much much bigger than you describe... it is like 3/8th " thick 1.5 " wide and about 3-4 " long!! it is black with a red cap...it also holds a spare fuse as well!!!

at least i think they used that style for the mid 90s and on

Re: 99 johnson wont start please help!

THANK YOU EVERYONE for the insight. I now have a better understanding of everything. I found a yellow wire w a red stripe unplugged from wgat looks like a neutral switch. the femald connector was split, I replaced the connector, and the engine fired right up. I spent the day on KY lake and nevervwould have had it this soon if not for the support here, thanks!
