I have a 99 trophy 22 1/2 foot with the 4.3 mercruiser, top speed is only like 32-33 mph, is that normal?

Sounds about right.
The boat in that configuration is a bit under powered.

My buddy bought his new.
Wanted to race me (different mfg. boat with 225 hp outboard) to the other side, ~6-7 miles.
My top end is @40 mph and I walked away from him at a pretty good clip

Sounds about right considering that 20 different things can affect speed. :)

Having said that, what prop are you running and what is your current WOT?

Could play games with the prop, but it's give and take, speed verse hole shot

Even in my 20' I feel the 4.3 is a bit underpowered, in a 22 I think it'd be more so, are you reaching the maximum WOT RPM? If not that should be investigated because a low WOT RPM leads to bad performance and increased engine strain and wear. If it's a 2bbl carb engine about all you can do is switch to a 4bbl intake and carb, even that's not giving a lot but maybe 25 hp.

Well that might be all you can get from that size engine in a 22’ boat. Mines 20’9”with a pre Vortec 4bbl, WOT is about the same. I weighed my boat & it’s a bit over 4,000 lbs.

My 22' Islanders does 34 mph with a 3.0 140hp....you need some work...
Comparing pumpkins to apples.

A 140hp I/O on my 22’ (280 hp max) would have a tough time even getting it on plane

Isn’t the Islander an alu boat therefore a lot lighter than fiberglass?

Yes it is, but poster is running about twice the hp ! The Islanders weighs around 2300 lbs plus gear. Still sounds slow for a V6 engine....

The 4.3 (Vortec) 2bbl had about 190 hp and the 4bbl had about 220 hp from what I was able to find
the pre Votec had about 175 for the 2bbl and 205 for the 4bbl

Trophy used the 190 Hp , 4.3.

In realty your looking at a 25% increase in HP, a 35% increase in weight and more deadrise to push.

Guessing he's looking at close to #4,100 plus gear
