Many of us agree the CDI stators are far better then OEM. CDI does not use the 'potting' that encapsulates many OEM stators, believing the added insulation causes the OEM stators to run hotter, thus contributing to early failure.
As to whether to take your boat 'off-shore', that is a tough decision that you will have to make yourself. 'IF' the old stator fails, it could ruin your whole day, or worse. Having replaced the bad batteries that probably contributed to the stator overheat can help extend the stator lifetime, BUT, the fact that the stator has already been overheated to the extent that it was melting the potting, isn't a good thing.
There is NO degree of certainty how long the old stator will last, which is cause to err on the side of safety.
Most of us would highly recommend you replace the stator before any off-shore running.
