I assume there are pieces of the old impeller causing water to leak from my exhaust.
Also, my engine is running very rough.
Any suggestions on how to clear broken impeller?

Welcome to Iboats.

Something isn't making sense. Bits of broken impeller shouldn't be making your exhaust leak. What may have happened is if your previous impeller fried and starved the engine for cooling water, you may have melted the rubber hose that connects the riser to the exhaust tube from the drive. Is this about the area it's leaking from? Also, if you overheated this, you may have done damage to the engine which is now causing your rough idle. :(

Do a compression test to check the health of the engine. If it checks out OK, start looking for the bits of broken impeller, as they may be stuck some place like the thermostat housing or exhaust riser, and could cause another overheat or high engine temps. Fix the the leak. I bet it's your exhaust hose.

Is the rubber hose your referring to the thick 4-6" dia according looking hose that connects to the large dia metal exhaust via 3+ clamps. If so, that seemed to be leaking. I saw that first and tried tightening up the clamps. The engine compartment is filling up with water when the engine runs.

I believe the leak is due to that large hose being compromised from the previous overheat. The large diameter exhaust hose can melt if the engine is run too long with no water exiting thru the exhaust, and it sounds like that happened.

I had to replace this same piece when a small hole was spitting water thru it. You can buy them here on Iboats in the parts store for about $25 and its an easy fix. Check out this thread:

It is the exhaust tube, It melted. This is an I/O and there is only about a 1 inch gap between the upper elbow and the riser. Will I need to to remove the elbow to put the new hose on? Assuming I have the tools to take off the elbow is this an easy job? I replaced the impeller with no problem. My mechanic implied that if the elbow has to come off I should have him do it. Is there something I'm not seeing it looks like its only 4 bolts. I'm sure I could save a couple hundred doing it myself. Also, I don't have a manual but this seems easy enough without one.

Thanks for the help

The riser or "elbow" as you are calling it should be easy enough for a novice to tackle. You will need to get a new hose, and factory riser gasket. While it's off you need to carefully inspect the manifold and riser for excessive rot, and pieces of the impeller. Post pictures of it while its apart if you are not sure what to look for.

As I mentioned before, if this impeller came apart and all the bits and pieces haven't been located, you need to see if you can find them. Some may pass through and out the exhaust, while others may get stuck in the T-stat housing, riser/manifold, or any small hoses.

I have very little mechanical ability and did mine in about 15 minutes. Read the thread I pointed to in an above post. I did exactly what Don said to do and it was very straightforward and simple. The lube ( I used wd-40) makes the old and new boots practically fall into place. Yes the elbow has to come off, but that's a breeze. loosen the clamps, pull it off, replace the rubber boot, reattach the elbow, tighten it all down. Definitely not something you need a mechanic for. If you have a flat head screwdriver and some lubricant spray, youre all set.

Like Rogers said, that would be a good time to take a look in the exhaust system for those pieces.

I ordered the Hose and gasket online. Do I need to use a gasket sealer when I replace the riser gasket?

If so I bought a product at Walmart called "Peratex Blue RTV Silicone gasket maker". It says "not recommended for use on head gaskets or parts in contact weith gasoline". Can I use this product for this application.

Also, when I disassemble the T-housing to look for the impeller pieces, Will I be able to reuse the thermostat and gasket? If not will I be able to buy it at an auto parts store or do I need to order it online?

Thanks again for the help
