When you take the sparkplug out of the cylinder and only have it in the wire and pull the roap, should you have spark?

No, you will have to have the threaded part of the spark plug connected to the block of the engine to complete the circuit. A spark plug tester is a nice tool to ensure you don't make contact when holding the plug to the block and get a nice shock!

Tape/clamp the threaded part plug to the block and watch for spark at the electrode - but for the price, I'd buy a tester.
