97 40 johnson cooling & oil leak issue

Hey guys my first post on this forum after using it for so long, I have a 40 hp Johnson vro as mentioned above, and only owned it for 2 weeks I've ran the motor only once for no longer than ten seconds before turning it off for no pushing any water through the telltale.

I'm sure this should be enough time to get water through so I killed it before it killed itself. I noticed before I turned it off that there was water peeing from the back of the lower unit where it connects to the upper unit from a little hole that I really don't know should be there or not. Any suggestions as to what is causing or what I can do to fix this, the motor sounded sweet and did not struggle to start dispite not being turned on for months.

The other issue is a gold inche long nipple looking thing directly under the throttle that keeps leaking oil and eventually finds its way through the motor housing, down the shaft and rests on the back of the lower unit before building up. Its not excessive but it its enough to cause concern. I'm no outboard guru but mechanically minded and can't figure out what this gold thing is. I would also like to point out that I did not see any smoke from the motor in that ten seconds it was on.

Any help would be much appreciated and save me a bit of money hopefully cheers

Hey guys just started her up again after a week and it fired first go , thank god that's not a problem but even after clearing the hose out from all the dried up debris still no water passing through. Is it possible that the muffs are leaking too much from the sides and not pushing enough water. Thanks guys

Hey guys just an update for who ever was interested in the thread, I ran the motor in a bucket of water but had to remove the prop to get it in. Pumped water like a garden hose for 15 minutes so success with that.

I recommend a bucket,barrel or what ever u want if your motor doesn't push water with muffs.

But there's only one thing and I hope someone can help after removing the bucket I noticed that oil had had run out of the top gear box fill plug. Its clear that I have to drain the old oil now and replace plus get new plugs n washers but is there anything else that could be causing this?

many outboards do not get enough water from muffs to run out the telltale, at least not until it's run for a minute. It's very nerve-wracking because you wonder if you are cooking the motor. I often have to push on the muff to get water up in there.

I don't understand why your LU fluid leaked out the top screw while running unless you removed it? If anything it drains out the bottom and the top is just a vent. So yes you want to drain and refill, put in new screws and washers, but also keep a close eye on it; you may have seal issues. Hope you didn't rev the motor in the bucket!
