I recently bought a 96 Javelin 409 F/S that has a Johnson Venom 200. Boat has a bad idle problem. I have done the link and sync, replaced the plugs, and just disabled the VRO this weekind now running 50:1. My problem occured this past weekend at the lake. I came running full blast to a fishin' hole and when I let out of it to slow down the motor went *CLUNK*, no gradual slow down and sieze just *CLUNK* about 2500 rpm to 0 in the blink of an eye. I took the plugs out for fear of a broke rod to see if the piston were all still moving, being that the starter wouldn't turn it over. I managed to wiggle the motor back free by hand. I just kept going back and forth with the flywheel and it finally let go and spun freely, all piston moving and sounded like they had compression. This led me to think I had a gear blow up in the foot, a friend of mine said his merc did this. Got my dad to tow me in with his boat for fear to run the engine until I got it inspected. Took the foot apart this weekend and gears, bearing, clutch dog, ect are perfect. Reinstalled on motor with new seals and water pump and fired on the ears. Motor will not idle but for a minute and has a bad backfire coming from the bottom left cylinder, found this by removing plug wires 'til it stopped backfiring. Top two cylinders on that side have fire according to timing light but when you remove the plug wires engine runs same. So basically it is only running ont the right side of the motor with the bottom left cylinder firing intermittently but all cylinders show fire with timing light consistenly. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT TO CHECK FROM HERE? I plan to do a compression check tomorrow and go from there. Also can anyone tell me what the proper firing order and location of cylinders are, my clymer manual doesn't have it.

welcome to the forum!

Did you notice anything abnormal about the spark plugs? Aluminum on any of 'em, or a smashed electrode?

Compression test will tell probably tell you which cylinders overheated and seized.

What were the symptoms that led you to linc & sync and replace plugs? Any other maintenance performed recently?

How long did the boat sit idle before you bought it?
