Re: stringers

Maybe, only you can answer that question.

Get back to us after you have had the glass fibers buried in your skin for a few hours. And after you have scraped most of the resin off your hands and arms.. :)

Re: stringers

Welcome to iboats.

You just paid money for a trailer and motor. Stringer repair which 75%+ of the time is also transom repair is at least another $1000+ 200+ man hours to repair.

Re: stringers

Re: stringers

New stringers = new stringers, new deck, new foam, and as Bob said probably a new transom... but it'll be a nice dependable boat when you're done with it and you'll know what you have.

Re: stringers

So what gives you the idea that you need a new stringer? Rot....most boats nowadays don't use wood in stringers any more, especially a company like Larson who has been around long enough to know what happens to wood in old boats. Did the orig owner hit a bad wave offshore and crack the hull? Does the floor go up and down as you go over the water? The engine is worth what you paid for the rig, probably the treailer also, being galvanized and a tandem.

stringers and floor replace?

stringers and floor replace?

just bought a 95 larson 194 sei, needs stringers and floor of course ,my question is should i do this while its on the trailer? the reason i ask is the windshield wont close ,does that mean the hull is being squeed? the overlap is about 3/4 inch.

transom

transom

95 larson transom seems good... only seems soft in the 1st 2' does that mean its bad? a buddy of mine said to stand on the lower gear and jump on it and see how much it moved...did that, it moved about 1/4inch, its a 175 johnson ocean runner? gelcoat only has minor stress cracks...

Re: solid as...

As worded, that's a difficult question to translate - but I'll give it a shot.

I'm guessing you mean that your transom only has about 2" of a soft spot and you're wondering if you can get away with just cutting out that spot and replacing it. I read a lot of threads here and it seems to me most people think their transoms are in far better shape then actually are - once they pull them out, they see just how bad the situation was. When I bought my boat I thought the transom was fine - when I pulled it out I found it was half rotten and entirely waterlogged and weighed about twice what it should.

My guess is that if you have found a 2" soft spot, you have lots of other soft spots - you just haven't found them yet. If you replace just the one spot, you will always have that nagging voice in the back of your head wondering about the rest of the transom. Ask yourself what's different about that spot than the rest of transom? Why would the rest of it be dry if that spot is rotten?

My advice - get it over with and replace the whole thing. Even though you haven't told us what kind of boat were talking about, I bet you'd be surprised that replacing the whole thing isn't going to be THAT much harder or more expensive than replacing just a small portion. If it's an aluminum boat, replacing the entire transom is really not a very big deal. If it's a glasser, you're cutting glass and re-glassing either way so why not do the whole thing and get the extra piece of mind you get from knowing for sure the entire thing is 100% solid?

Re: stringers and floor replace?

Secure the trailer well, and build a framework of 2X4's around the hull prior to removing the deck and stringers. This will allow the hull to retain it's intended form and continue to perform as it was designed when you're done. Check out Friscoboater's 95 Sea Ray resto thread.

You should take some core samples from the inside and see what you get.

Re: solid as...

Do a drill test in your transom. I think that's alot of flex and might need to be replaced.
Keep all your qustions in one thread, please. It makes it easier for us to follow.
