Hey everyone.. no, I'm not dead, lol...

Just stopping in to say I hope everyone had a great turkey day! The boat hasn't been getting much attention since the end of the season... I still have a ton of things I want/need to do, so this definitely isn't the end of this thread...

Hope everyone is doing well!

Happy Thanksgiving to you, too.

I am making progress as well online and still have a lot to do. I am hoping to take advantage of the fall weather to get most of mine back together (before it gets too cool to work fiberglass).

Howdy all!

Been a long time... I'm itching to get back to boating this year and still have a pretty good size list of things I want/need to do.

I've been pretty much entirely hands off with the boat since last fall minus winterizing...Not because I didn't feel like doing anything but I've been pretty much entirely engulfed in a patio project I started toward the end of last summer. I had a contractor do the concrete/footing work which involved extending my existing 12x12 conrete slab another 10' the one way and another 4 feet the other way... Then I build a roof over the new patio, built an outdoor kitchen, plumbed everything, ran electric, put up ceiling fan, tongue and groove pine ceiling, lighting, concrete countertops, and on, and on, and on... lol
It feels good to be done with it now so I can enjoy it with my friends and family, but I'm ready to get back at the boat!

I've been staring at this box of new Faria gauges that I need to get installed... I also need to finish the ski locker lid.. Drove me nuts having it unfinished last year. The other big thing is, I want to get my bimini top canvas redone... It got destroyed by mice in storage.

Anywho.. good to be back on the forum and see all the new projects going on, but also good to see we still have the good ol' boys still hanging around lol

I'm starting to throw together a plan of what I want to do first, and while many things on my list are easier, I think the first thing I want to do is clean/paint the trailer...

Its probably by far the most labor intensive thing I need to do, but everything else is more of a want than a need.
Obviously I don't NEED to paint my trailer as its galvanized, but the fenders have exhausted their zinc coating and need addressed, and I really think the bunks need replaced/recarpeted... I redid the bunk brackets last year as they were very rusted, but it was kinda half-arsed because I only jacked up the boat one side at a time... It would be way easier if the boat were off the trailer...

This is gonna take a brain workout to figure out the best way to remove the boat from the trailer... Unfortunately, I don't have access to a slip that I can leave the boat, so I'm going to try to do this in the driveway. Theres enough of the aft end hanging off the trailer that I can build up some cribbing/supports under the transom... From that point, I will need to lift the front of the boat enough to move the trailer forward until a cross member is in the way... Then it will just be shuffling supports until the trailer is entirely out from underneath...

I was thinking I might be able to use my engine hoist to lift the bow and then I won't have to shuffle supports around, but I doubt the hoist has enough reach to stay clear of the trailer...
I also have a chain hoist, but that means I'd have to build some sort of gantry and with the price of wood right now, thats no cheap solution.

Probably gonna stick with my plans of just shuffling bottle jacks / blocks of wood unless I come up with something better.

I picked up my paint yesterday. Its sherwin williams Pro Industrial DTM Acyrlic. After a good pressure wash and scrub with some white vinegar, It should be good to go directly over galvanized steel. I know theres some issues around painting galvanized, but it looks like its actually a very common and durable coating as long as you follow the correct procedure... It needs to be properly "weathered", then solvent washed to remove any oils. Then it needs chemically etched with a alkaline or acid solvent (hence the vinegar)... I'm just going with vinegar cuz I don't feel bad about washing it down my driveway, plus I can dip my french fries in it afterwards...

Once thats dry, should be good to go with the topcoat... I'm just debating whether or not I want to brush/roll on or rent an airless sprayer... one costs money and is messier, but it would be so much faster and I'd get a better finish since its gloss.

Anywho, thats the plan for now... Pics coming when I start all this shenanigans..

If you have a air compressor (doesn't have to be a big one) Lowes has a siphon and gravity lvlp gun combo for $70. I use it with the harbor freight 21gal compressor for when I have to go somewhere besides my garage to paint. It doesn't drain the compressor to the point of having to stop because of the low cfm the gun needs. If you already have the compressor may be a cheaper option than renting an airless and you will always have it.

I assume I'd need to invest in a dryer and oil separator too... I'll have to look into that... been thinking about trying to paint a car too so might be a good idea...

For a large project I would, if you do not run oil through your lines you may not need the oil separator. You can use the small disposable inline dryer with that setup I use it attached to the regulator on the gun.

For $70 though you cant beat it, I was a little worried it would be a really rough spray pattern that was going to need tons of color sanding and wet sanding clear but it lays paint real smooth when thinned properly and the gun is clean.

She floats! at least in the driveway that is... This was a bit of a snap a pencil with your butt cheeks pucker kinda thing... But the dirty rotten baystard is officially off the trailer and hovering in the driveway. Having the engine hoist made it much easier than all the other videos I've seen. Once I had the transom up on cribbing, I used the hoist to lift the bow and since its out of the way, I only need to move the support 1 time, instead of several times for each cross member and axle...

I then added in a bunch of supports (not shown here) just as a belt and belt and wrachet strap and super glue and suspenders approach... With my kiddos and the other ones in the neighborhood, I'm a nervous wreck having this thing up in the air... I even went around to my neighbors and just warned them and asked them to tell their kids to not go anywhere near the boat...

Legalities aside, now its time to give the trailer a good cleaning and acid etching, then gonna give her 2 or 3 coats of the sherwin williams DTM pro industrial acrylic.
I ended up decided not to spray as I just don't really have the equipment and doing it outside, I'm worried about overspray on my neighbors cars lol.

Just gonna roll and maybe try roll and tip and see what comes out better.

Thats all fer now!

No real progress to update yet... I spent a couple hours yesterday removing the fenders because the bolts holding them on were incredibly rusted... Lots of PB Blaster and mapp gas... Finally got em all but one... After that, I need to remove the winch support/bow roller assembly and a few other things and thats as much as I'm going to disassemble.

Hope you had a great Father's day too! I'm watching as I need to paint and overhaul my trailer too. Debating on doing it myself or paying someone to spray it.

I don't know why it didn't dawn on me at first, but there is a lot of crap that needs to be removed from a trailer to paint it... lol
I guess I could have half-arsed it and just left everything and painted over and around stuff but thats a recipe for disaster and a short lived paint job.
Between family visiting and the weather I haven't gotten too far. I still need to remove some more hardware and the bunks before I can prep for paint.

I ended up picking up a product made by kleenstrip that is basically a phosphoric acid... Its made to convert rust as well as etch the metal to prep for paint... It says it will work on steel, aluminum, and galavnized, so I figured I'd give it a go.

Looks like the weather is gonna be great here the next few days, so hopefully I can get this thing done and get the boat back on soon.

Got everything removed this evening that is going to get removed before painting... I'm not messing with the axles/leafsprings/etc... I also am going to leave the coupler on because I don't feel like rebleeding the brakes when I'm done lol.

Hoping to get my butt moving here in the next day or two because the weather is going to be perfect for painting.
Thats all for now!

Didn't snap any pictures cuz it looks basically the same lol, but today I degreased the whole trailer with full strength purple power... I think it also stripped some of the tar out of my asphalt driveway lol...
After it dried, I then sprayed the whole thing down with phosphoric acid the etch the galvanizing as well as convert any rust where the galvanizing wore thru or any steel hardware...

Should be ready for me tomorrow to lay down some paint after a quick wipe with a rag...

Basically at the mercy of the weather here lately... can't apply the paint unless humidity is below 80 and temp below 95... pretty much struggling with that.. tonight I put on a stripe coat on all the sharp edges, welds, and holes... it was not entirely necessary to do a stripe coat but it was more just a reason to test the paint and see how thick it is.... this stuff is super thick and its not recommended to thin so I'm probably not gonna like the finish of this, but oh well lol...
I'm gonna test the adhesion tomorrow and see if it has a good bite.. if so, then I'm hoping to roll on a coat tomorrow
