First time posting, I have an issue with a 96 50HP 2 stroke on an 18 ft pontoon boat. A little history, when we first bought the boat last summer the water pump went out the first time we had it in the lake. We got the pump replaced as well as the heat sensor. Now it will run at 2/3 throttle as long as we want, however, if you push up to full throttle I get a hot light after just a few minutes of running. Any suggestions/thoughts would be welcome.

Thanks,

CDBird

Is the over board water indicator peeing ? Does the mtr go into SLOW when the hot light comes on ? Do you have system check ?

Yes, water pump is working. No. Not that I am aware of.

Any chance you have a short-shaft motor?

Hmm, that I don't know, I'm new to this whole boating thing LOL. I will get the motor model no. and check into it.

Or is it on a jack-plate or similar...and maybe up too high?

It doesn't make a lot of sense that anything in the motor would cause an overheat going from 2/3 throttle to higher RPM.
My first thought is that it may be the trim etc. of the whole rig and an intake problem from not enough of the L/U in the water.

Does the pontoon go noticeably more nose-down at WOT?

I hadn't thought of that. It's possible that I was running it trimmed wrong or that it's mounted to high. I will look into that for sure.

Thanks.
