I just purchased a 17 foot '95 bayliner with a Force 120 outboard motor. First time out on the water and it ran for 15-25 minutes great and then would not accelerate past 10 mph. Any suggestions on what might be causing this? I'm very unknowledgable and unexperienced, please give any help with simplicity and clarity. Thanks!

Re: '95 Force 120

Welcome to iboats jlane03.

This is one heck of a problem.
Well, lets get started.
It could be one of 75 things. :)
Gonna half to ask a bunch of questions so we can narrow it down.

1- Do you know if the engine performed properly in the recent past?
2- Does your boat have a built-in gas tank, or portable tanks?
3- Did you add fresh gas to the tank(s)?
4- Did you mix tc-w3 oil with the gas?
5- If portable tank, is the little vent on the tank open?
6- Does the boat have a tachometer?
7- If so, what are the rpm's when the boat is struggling to go 10mph?

8- Does the engine sound like it is revving up as high as it was earlier in the day, or is the engine only running at a slow speed?

9- When the engine is running, is there a stream of water coming out of the telltale spout, on the starboard side of the motor?

10- Does the engine sound any different?
Sputtering?, missing?

11- Any beeping or buzzers from up near the steering wheel?

Please answer all question to the best of your ability.
Be patient, we'll get to the bottom of it.

Re: '95 Force 120

Thanks so much for you Help!!

1- Do you know if the engine performed properly in the recent past?

The seller told me it had no problems last summer when it was last ran.

2- Does your boat have a built-in gas tank, or portable tanks?

Built-in

3- Did you add fresh gas to the tank(s)?

The seller told me to use up the old gas before refilling. Once the motor started running poorly I put 6 gallons of gas and oil into the tank to hopefully solve the problem.

4- Did you mix tc-w3 oil with the gas?

I believe it was tc-w3. I used the oil recommended at the Marina. It said 2 stroke outboard on the bottle. ( I found a bottle of a different type of oil from the previous owner that I believe they were using. Looked like the wrong type.)

5- If portable tank, is the little vent on the tank open?

Not portable

6- Does the boat have a tachometer?

No

7- If so, what are the rpm's when the boat is struggling to go 10mph?

It seemed to be revving normally.

8- Does the engine sound like it is revving up as high as it was earlier in the day, or is the engine only running at a slow speed?

The engine will not rev up as high as it was earlier. It has two speeds, slow and slower.

9- When the engine is running, is there a stream of water coming out of the telltale spout, on the starboard side of the motor?

I didn't notice this, but didn't look.

10- Does the engine sound any different?
Sputtering?, missing?

Nothing serious sounding. It ran pretty solid.

11- Any beeping or buzzers from up near the steering wheel?

Nope.

Thanks again!

Re: '95 Force 120

You know about the rubber bulb pump on the fuel line, right?
You squeeze it to pump fuel to the engine before starting.
Well, when the engine was sputtering, did you notice if the bulb had gone soft or flat?

I'm confused by your answers to number 7 and 8 above. revving normally/will not rev up ??
Please explain.

If engnie was revving up high, we have narrowed it down to one area.

If engine will only rev up a little, then we have to keep working on it.

What part of the country are you located in?

Re: '95 Force 120

Yes, I know about the rubber bulb and used it before starting the engine.

What I mean about the revving is that it seemed to be perfectly fine, except that it wouldn't rev very high. It sounded smooth and the same as before it slowed down. And it would rev up a little as I put the throttle down, but not very much at all. I don't really know how to describe it except that the motor sounded about right for how fast we were going. But it wouldn't increase past this very conservative level.

Re: '95 Force 120

It sounds as if the prop maybe spinning on the hub @ high rpms but catches enough to 2 run @ low rpms. Or it could be you have fishing line wrapped around the prop shaft.

I don't think its ever getting to high rpms. Sorry I'm having such a hard time explaining this.

sorry roscoe, I forgot to answer another one of your questions.
I did not notice the rubber pump going flat or real soft.

Re: '95 Force 120

quick and dirty compression check.

take out all four spark plugs. rotate engine clockwise. it should spin easily with no clunking, clanking, or grinding.

stick you thumb over top spark plug hole so that air can't escape. rotate engine. it should be very stiff for 1/4 of the rotation and the air should push very hard on your thumb. do it for all four cylinders. they should all act the same. if one of them is noticeably different, then go to parts store and buy a compression tester.

if they are all so close that you can't tell one from another, then look at your fuel delivery system. chances of having good spark at idle but not on throttle are far lower than chances of a failure in fuel delivery system.

I hope you understand that I meant rotate the engine by turning the flywheel with your other hand. the ignition should be off with key removed.
you could hurt yourself quite badly if you crank the starter.

Re: '95 Force 120

Ok, I'd say we are getting closer.
You may have lost compression on one cylinder, but I think you would have to lose compression on 2 cylinders to restrict your speed to 10 mph.
And with 2 cylinders down, I would expect the engine to die whenever you put it in gear.
But not a bad idea to check the compression at this point.

So I would place a 90% bet that you have a fuel related problem.

1- make sure the gas tank vent is unobstructed, you can do this by blowing air into it with your mouth.

2- syphon or drain all the fuel out of the tank, use it in the lawn mower or truck.

3- replace the entire fuel line, from the tank to the fuel pump. buy a quality hose and bulb from a dealer, not a cheap $12 one from kmart. It makes a difference.

4- remove the fuel tank sending unit and inspect the tank and fuel pick-up tube for debris. Flush, syphon, clean as needed.

5- inspect all fuel line from the fuel pump to the carbs, for cracks and leaks, replace as needed.

6- replace the fuel pump diaphram and gaskets, about $14 in parts from any Merc dealer, usually come with instruction sheet..

You should be able to do all this with the most basic of tools, and about $50 in parts.

Mix up 6 gallons of fuel and try it out.

If this solves the problem, great.
If not, I would suggest a thorough cleaning and rebuild of the carbs. If this is too much for you to tackle, seek out experienced help.

Don't be afraid to ask for more help, and report back with results.

Re: '95 Force 120

One more thing.
You should remove the cover so you can look into the carbs.
With engine off, push the throttle to wide open.
Now look inside the carbs to see if the plate is opening all the way up, to the full horizontal position.

Be careful when clearing the gas vent, wasps (mud dobbers) like to nest in those areas and they can have nest built in a matter of hours.

Re: '95 Force 120

Well, this weekend I popped open the motor and it didn't take long for me to find the problem. I'm pretty blessed because it was so simple, easy, and FREE. Along the throttle linkage there is a place where you can adjust where the motor idles... there was an obvious disconnect of two pieces. I simply reconnected and tightened and with a little adjustment to get back to the right idle speed it was ready to go. I also cleaned out the water release hole and line and now water will pee out. So, I'm pretty excited and plan to be back on the water as soon as it gets warm again.
Thanks for all your help.
