I have a 1994 Merc 175 hp, that stalled out while going across Castaic Lake in rough water. While crossing I heard one beep then the outboard lost power. I quickly set the outboard back to nutural and the outboard remained running for about 10 sec before it stalled out. I tried to turn it back on but it would not turn on. All it would do is turn over. Leaving out that it might be a fuel or ignition problem any ideas what could be wrong. Seems to be getting fuel and spark. Have not checked compression. Any help please?

Thanks trout/bass

Check the compression as a start.I doubt it is what caused the shutdown, but if the compression is bad it determines how far you go fixing the current problem.

You need to check the spark, with a spark tester. If it's not jumping 3/8 to 7/16 inch on all cylinders, you have a problem.

Take a fuel sample and put it in a glass container. If you see layers,or dirt, you have a fuel problem.

Also squeeze the primer bulb (if the gas is ok).if the motor runs and quits, squeeze again. If it runs and keeps quitting, you may have a fuel pump problem.

Just trying to help you zero in on you problem.

Ok

I checked the compression and two cylinders have about 90 lbs of compression. The rest have between 115 and 125. Could this be the problem. Everything else seems to check out (spark and gas). That as far I could check with my experience. Any ideas?

Thanks

All the cylinders should be around 10% from eachother in PSI. Ours did the same thing before it ate itself, it overheated, and melted down a piston because the oil pump gear went bad. We had it rebuilt, now we have close to 140 on each piston. Now that is 30 over and still very tight. But the point is, they should all be pretty close.
