If she were mine, and while I had her all clean and prepped, I'd coat her with Gluvit, or Coat-IT to ENSURE that she did NOT LEAK and did NOT have further Corrosion issues and THEN give her a paint job. Cost a bit more BUT the peace of mind FOR ME would be worth it, especially if you are planning on keeping the boat for any length of time.

thanks wood, i will apply gluvit to all seams and rivits, and also where the foam was. Should i zc prime first? i picked up an epoxy stick at west, so i plan to fill pin holes and pits, coat with gluvit, prime, then top coat with rusto. whata think??

Gluvit has an etching primer (or something like that) built in and is meant to be applied to bare aluminum.

Re: 93' StarCraft 16' project

thanks ez, i just tried the epoxy stick from west marine, so far seams like good stuff. i mixed up a small batch and made a ball, i used another marble size batch as a test on a old piece of stringer aluminum. after about 2 hours the ball is now a small stone, and the stringer "patch" is hard and stuck so well i can not remove with a chisel. I applyed the epoxy to a drity unprepped flat portion of the test aluminum and it seams to hold great. I am sure it will work just fine on the small pin holes.

I found gluvit online for $52 a quart, but they messed up my order so i won't be seeing it till the 23! thats my next step so they really jammed me up. o'well maybe i will just grab some local, i will probly need more anyway

Re: 93' StarCraft 16' project

Time for an update, I have received all my orders for materials. I got the hull cleaned out and gluvit-ed, one quart was enough to coat the whole inside of the hull.( now that i have the gluvit on all bare aluminum do i need to prime with ZC??). I have most of my plywood coated with u.s. Composite thin epoxy. and i have started spraying all the boxes and such with rusto aluminum primer over existing paint and top-coat with storm-gray rusto-pro. I like to do thin coats 48 hours apart (its been cold) so far it looks great and passes the nail test. im pretty impressed with the results. My buddy isnt gonna need his garage for a while so i now have a paint booth!! Plus hes got paint sprayers and a big AC with a regulator!! So i dont have to use rattle cans, im very happy with the stuff i rattled-caned so far but the hull may be to much work.
Once the hull is painted a can install the stringers. the stringers had some corrosion on them so i cleaned em up and sprayed them with the aluminum primer. Then run some wires and install the deck. Then i can install boxes and live well, wrap the tops with new carpet and install. I got the premium wt. blue carpet from BPS, i really like it nice and thick and soft. So thats where im at...................

Things are starting to come together quick!!!

Ill post some pics of my progress tomorrow:rolleyes:

I can't see why you'd need to paint the inside of the hull.

Definitely get the idea of rattle canning your top coats out of your head. I rattle canned my Jupiter and it went pretty horribly. Bad bad overspray. And I went through so many cans, it cost a fortune.

Re: 93' StarCraft 16' project

yeah im damn good with a spray can but i would much rather use a gun, im not expericed with a spray gun so i will start below deck, till i get a hang of it. I want to paint the hull under the deck to protect from sinkers and hooks, i had some bad pitting(pin holes) so i wanna try to ensure i dont have more corroison. plus im sure i will have more then enough paint outta one quart.

The only paint i can get in the color i want is gloss, i would rather have satin or semi on the interior. Is there an additve i can use to dull-it-down??

Re: 93' StarCraft 16' project

i finally got the boat painted!! i bought a HF spraygun and thin the paint about 20%. It came out pretty nice. 100_1270.jpg100_1269.jpg

I got a real nice piece of plywood at a local distributor, 5x12 3/4 9 ply Ext.
cut and epoxyed.100_1271.jpg

thats the underside of the deck, the top looks even better, its gonna be hard to cover over with vinyl flooring.....

so i should have the deck wraped in vinyl and start on runing wire and hooking up the bilge pump and livewell pump today. The stringers are riveted, we used the green string to hold them in place so i wont miss with the rivets when the deck is installed.

i need to clean out my SD card so i can take more pics. so i will post updates wit pics later.

Re: Anodized Aluminum info

thnaks guys, I am about to go run all my wires, install foam and install deck today. The deck is 3/4 plus epoxy, plus vinyl. I wantd to use long aluminum rivets, but a cant find any that are longer then 1'' grip. I guess i will have to use screws, can i use 316 ss, or should i use aluminum screws? I know from experience aluminum screws can be a pain, striping out and snapping. but i defiantly dont want to invite corrosion. Whatta think??

Re: Anodized Aluminum info

I used the deck screws from lowes/home depot on both my boats and they work fine.

Re: 93' StarCraft 16' project

Finaly made some progress today. I got the wires sorted out, the foam laid in the hull, i used the pink sheets as you can see. I used spray foam as glue to hold all the little pieces together. Once i screw the deck down it should be nice and tight, i hope it doesnt squeak to much. The big deck piece is wraped in vinyl, ready to be installed. The back piece still needs to be wrapped in vinyl, i need more glue. I hope i can get that done tomorrow. We'll see:rolleyes:013.jpg015.jpg001.jpg014.jpg

Re: 93' StarCraft 16' project

So i got the deck screwed down(used ss screws, aluminum would not hold). and now i im ready to attach the livewell and other boxes. All the boxes where attached to the hull with solid rivets from the factory. I am thinking of using closed-end pop rivets rather then solid ones. This way i wont need an air hammer. It seems like the closed-end will give better results with less work. What do you guys think?? Are the closed end riviets too weak??
