today i started my "winter" boat project. the floor is very weak in some spots so that is the main project. most of the carpet is in bad shape as well. as of right now i dont have any electronics other then the lights and livewell, and a rigged up bildge pump i thru in, in the middle of last summer. while i have it open i plan to run new wires for the fish-finder and radio. i have a few other ideas for some minor changes. but for the most part i will try to keep it simple and fix the rotted floor and redo the carpet.

this is my first boat, i got it thru a barter deal, installing new soffet and fasica on a friends place. i feel like i stole it but he is happy the work got done and the boat is out of his yard. i plan on keeping this boat forever, so i wanna fix this floor so i will never have to do it again.

this is what i started with.......................

Re: 93' StarCraft 16' project

this is what it looks like at the end of day one...........
i got all the carpeted plywood out and put aside. the next step is to remove the rivits holding the boxes in to the sides of the hull. i have been i little iffy about how to go about removing them, i have no exp with rivits, im thinking i will drill out the center from the out-side of the boat, will i need bigger rivits when i put them back? can i remove them with out messing up the old holes?

Re: 93' StarCraft 16' project

pics of carpet and plywood layout for top of boxes and front deck, plywood looks great for being outside for at least the last 4 years, it doesnt look like they used any carpet glue, is it clear and dried out?? or non existent?? i will def replace carpet with new heavy weight, but the vinyl for the floor is expensive. new plywood, epoxy, vinyl, and adhesive for 16 feet adds up fast. what are my options? i am looking for something thats gonna last and clean up easy. can anybody point me to a thread with pics of vinyl floor being installed, please.

Use a center punch to start on the rivets.
Use a drill bit that is one size smaller.
Shop at home depot or other box store for your vinyl.

Oh and nice boat. Well worth your time and effort.
Welcome to the club.

Excellent rig MD! You'll love it!

Click on the "Starcrafts being rebuilt" thread link in my signature. Right off the top of my head you could check out Huron Angler's and Ezmobee's projects to see some vinyl going down.

Congrats man!:D

Re: 93' StarCraft 16' project

i tryed the home improvement stores but was told that they dont make vinyl for outside! not sure she knew what i was talking about!. i am a home re modeler so i shop those places alot and have never seen that vinyl. i must be a regional thin.g i am having no luck finding the vinyl and plywood or even carpet localy.. i am trying to avoid paying shiping if i can, and i would like to see it before i buy it. i live in north Delaware does anybody know where i can buy this stuff in the tri-state area

i drilled out about half the rivits last night before i ran outta light, hope to have it completey striped by the end of the day. so i will be ready to clean up and gluvit weather permitting. we have had a few warm days but not sure if it will last. i think they are calling for more snow this week

You can use regular exterior plywood.

Re: 93' StarCraft 16' project

doesnt the new ext plywood have copper or some thing in it? i do alot of metal work on houses and have always been told not to wrap pressure treaded. but i have never actually seen it done so i dont know if thats a myth or not.

i have been told i can get the mairne for about 80 bucks at my local lumber yard.
i think i will buy 2 shts for the floor and use the nices plywood i can find laying around for the carpeted areas, those pices are very easy to remove. and wouldnt be such a big deal to replace in a few years as i am sure the carpet will be faded anyway. im on the boat daily in the summer.

thanks for the link EZ i can order that stuff to a local store. i got to touch a 2''x3'' sample! i think im sold! I got a price of 30 bucks a yard, it comes 54 inches. that should be just enough to roll it over the edges a bit and run long way with a 12' piece. the bow gets carpet
can the vinyl be rolled under the decking? is it stiff?

No your thinking of pressure treated. Regular exterior ply is untreated. It just uses waterproof glue. Contrary to popular belief, marine great usually isn't treated either. It's just higher quality glue, and better void-free construction. (The PT info you got is not a myth. That stuff WILL eat aluminum)

The vinyl is very pliable. You can roll it, tuck it, etc easily. Glad you found a deal on it!

Re: 93' StarCraft 16' project

thanks for the info ez, i think i will go with the MG plywood just for piece of mind. i have those boxes that screw down into the deck and get rivits into the sides i dont wanna ever have to re-do the rivits. but for the top carpet peices i will go with 3/4 ext ply and seal it with some basic wood sealer. i was a little overwhelmed with all the epoxys and sealers at the store, what should i be using to seal the mg plywood decking?

i wasnt gonna make i lot of changes but after i saw the bow of your ss i think i wanna try to to the same thing with the removeable deck thingie, i use this boat for bass fishing and the flat deck up front is nice. but i also fish the bay where it is much rougher, and standing up on the deck is a little risky. also with the deck piece out it looks like a good place for the kids to sit.

MG is great, less voids very straight, nice. It's a little pricier than other options and availability can be tricky in some areas. As nice as it is the key is to do a super job of sealing it all up. You'll want to lay down 2 or 3 coats of epoxy resin for your deck and I'd suggest the same for your hatch tops, especially since they are being carpeted. I got my stuff from US Composits, great price, fast shipping. I know the other guys have also had great results with Clarkcraft too. If you feel compelled to spend a lot of money West System is excellent.

Have fun man!

Re: 93' StarCraft 16' project

thanks jas. yeah i think your right about the hatch covers, i should just go for the 3/4 mg for the hatch covers. i laid it all out and i should be able to do it with one sht. the epoxy cost more then the wood anyway so the cost would not be too much more. i got a price for $79 1/2 mg........$90 3/4 mg. and since they stock it i wont be paying shiping. actually i have found all materials for the job local, and the vinyl and carpent gets shiped to the store so no extra shiping cost!!

right now i am driving a work van with no reverse! so i cant pull the boat now. but that may be a blessing. if the weather breaks before the boat is done i will never finish complete. so it looks like this project will turn out nice!

Excellent boat to rebuild, I really like that layout and storage design.

It sounds like you are on the right track, and you should not have to rebuild the deck anytime soon.

Ha ha, I know how you feel...I'm back to work on my transom now after rebuilding the deck and fishing tons last summer. If it turns out to be a 2-year project no big deal. I think you will be right on time for this spring though.:)

Looking forward to what she looks like all done, a sweet rig for sure.:D

Re: 93' StarCraft 16' project

i got snowed on again! today wasnt to windy so i drilled out the rest of the rivits, pulled out the live well and the back bench. easy enough. then i pulled up the decking and put it to the side for a template. i can belive how flimsy the center stringer is! i think my gutters on the house are thicker gauge. i plan to replace with pieces of an aluminum ladder. also the plywood decking is wider and longer then 48'' and i want to wrap the vinyl so i guess i will have one more seam then i want to.629.jpg628.jpg626.jpg627.jpg

Re: 93' StarCraft 16' project

actually in my niegborhood we build in the front yard,:D the back yard is for storage:eek:

i was digging in my scrap pile and found a diamond in the rough. the stringers from my buddys boat he rebuilt last year. he moved a couple months ago and had a dumpster out front. i saw some aluminum and saved it from the dump. i didnt know what it was when i grabed it. but im glad i did.

i have been trying to find ext ply 5x12 1/2'' but the best i can find in stock is 3/4, to heavy?
and they cant order one or two sheets. gotta be bulk.

they have MG 4x8 in stock, and they cost about the same (one sht 3/4 5x12....two sht MG. but i really dont want seams i would like to spray the boat out from front to back with out spraying water beween the seams, i would like to wrap the vinyl under the ply. i feel like if its cut to fit water will get under the vinyl. how can i install this vinyl to where the edges are sealed? maybe run up the hull half way and rivit trim across the top? i could use flashing to make the transition from the floor to the hull and glue the vinyl to the flashing, then install my boxes. think it could work?

I put a 3/4" deck in both my projects and prefer it.
