Any suggestions on changing out a piston? Is it an okay operation for a shade tree mechanic? Or should it be left to a professional?

Just need to change out the top piston, it didnt get enough water to it so changing of the water pump as well...I have done plenty of auto rebuilds...is this something that is much different? Thanks for your help...

They're fairly simple. Be very careful reassembling the caps on the rods. Fitting the wrist pin in the piston requires special tools. You may want an old Force dealer do that part for you (Mercury). Get the parts from them and they may do it cheap or free. If it needs boring, the machinist needs to go by spec and not by fit of the piston. Many auto machine shops are unaccustomed to the fit which is different than 4-strokes. The dealer should be able to give you the spec.
