91 4L Ford Ranger Starter hesitating

New battery and ground wire. Starter pauses (clicks) after turning the key before spinning the engine. I'm thinking the starter is going or the connections at the starter are spotty, but wanted your opinions. TIA.

It's almost always connections.

Also, verify you are in getting a signal to the starter.

Ford still uses an external solenoid switch on some models. I've had to replace mine on my '94 for a similar symptom.
