I just got this rebuilt motor from a shop, and i saw it running while they were doing adjustments and it pushing water through fine. Get it home and try to start it on the muffs and nothing.. Is it supposed to start peeing immediately, or even while it's still off? I've run it about 5 seconds and gotten nothing. It's tempting to run it a while longer and see if its just sucking some water though, but how long is it ok to run with nothing coming out of the port?

Run it a little longer and see what it's doing, 5 seconds isn't much, intakes are in the middle of the gearcase, make sure they are free of debris.

Probably not a problem.... It all depends on how wells your muffs fit and how much water pressure and volume you have compared to what the shop had...

I often get a weaker tell tale stream when I run my engines on the muffs compared to being in the water....

And 5 seconds isn't near enough time, on the muffs if may take 20 or 30 seconds and sometimes longer to completely fill up the engine water jackets, water tube, etc. and purge out all the air before you get any telltale stream as your hose is only supplying the water to the pump, not pumping water into the engine as that only happens when the engine is running and the impeller is turning...
