9.9 solanoid

Hello helpful people!
On a 9.9 Mariner outboard I have power to the solonoid when I turn the key but nothing is happening! If I take a cable from the battery direct to the starter, turns over fine. Is is the solonoid for sure or could it be anything else?

Definately the solenoid. Check connections for corroded wire and such. Clean em up and tighten them down. If it doesnt want to kick over you have already isolated the issue. New solenoid it is. Good luck!

Thank you Pete from accross the pond, it is as I thought, all the connectors are new so no corrosion, new one it is. weather is fantastic over here at the moment, I should be out in the boat!

Hi marlow,
I don't know if you have a two or a four stroke. The 4 stroke has a switch interlock with the shift lever, are you are getting 12 volts across the solinoid coil and not the starter motor relay terminals. If it is that new I doubt it is the solinoid, . Be sure that you read 12v when you turn the key or button. If you don't get a solid click from the solinoid then it probably not getting full voltage.

Latest update and another question! BUT first, sorry about my spelling, not my strongest subject!

Fitted a new solonoid as suggested, now spinning like a goodun, yipee! Thanks for confirming what I thought.

Next question, I seem to have a short somewhere, when the engine spins, if it does not start within a couple of seconds, the 20amp fuse blows. If it starts quick, no problem and it runs fine. Would I be correct in thinking it is some where in the Quicksilver Remote control, possibly the key switch?and thanks in advance.

Yet again, any advice welcome and thanks in advance.

What is that 20Amp in line with? What gauge wire is coming off of it?

Hi yet again!
The fuse is the only one inside the 4 stroke outboard engine, it "protects" the starter as when it blows, the starter will not spin. Its to dark "this side of the pond" now to see where it goes but will check in the morning. Cheers, Martin

It doesn't protect the starter, it probably protects the key switch wiring, since you changed the solenoid, more than likely you have a short between the fuse and anything it feeds, ie: key switch and anything downstream of switch (could be any accessory fed off switch). I presume wire color is probably red and probably about 16/14 gauge. You'll need to systematically determines what circuit it feeds and what is blowing the circuit. Probably going to take some time, and will be the last place you check, so check that place first

Thanks for that, it is indeed a red wire.
When I was checking the recently purchased engine over, the fuse holder looked "iffy" so replaced the holder, the old one had a beautiful piece of thin tin strip inside instead of a fuse! A long term problem I feel, I guess myself and the previous owner were lucky not to have a fire!!!

Also just remembered, the ******** person who I purchased the boat from has rewired it all, lights, radio, water pump and everthing else......................all in red wire, terrific! Pray for me please!

Yeah now you need to figure out how everything else is wired. Hopefully he wired all the other stuff direct to battery and not through the fused wire your having problems with. Sounds like you're going to start ripping and tearing. Does the boat have an automatic bilge pump (ie: float level switch) cause that would be the first circuit I would isolate.

No bilge pump, one thing less to check!
I have not put her in the water yet, due to get wet next week, just hope she floats!
Will be out tomorrow with my metres and lots of fuses.......and a swear box, at least its sunny, will keep you informed.

Mmmm, good point, perhaps I had better launch her in shallow water, slowly! Thank you for your concern!

Taken the remote controll of this morning, nothing obvious to see with the switch or wireing. Did notice that the red wire by the fuse holder was warm when the fuse blew AGAIN, but then I suppose it would be if it is getting to much current. Will keep looking!
