Hello, I just purchased a 1975 Johnson 9.9. I ran it for about 5 min with muffs and it didn't seem to be pumping water through it, yet I could still touch the motor without burning my fingers which makes me think it must be cooling it. I know this model doesn't have the pee hole but water doesn't seem to be coming out the prop. I definately can't feel warm water coming out. There is also water leaking out of the lower pivit point on the motor (not sure what its called but its the "hinge that lets the motor turn left and right) Is this normal? I'm not to sure where to start looking for problems. Any advice is much appreciated, Thanks

Re: 9.9 Johnson not pumping water

Start by ditching the muffs and get the engine (lower unit) in a barrel with water level about 3" above the split between gear case and leg.
If you do not know the age of impeller, order a new and change. Might even be an idea to check/change thermostat as well. A bit tricky to get the thermostat cover off. You either have to remove the latch in lower cover or remove the head.
