9.9 evenrude wont start

I have a chance to buy a 80's evenrude 9.9, good compression and spark, I don't know much about motors but it looks to be in great shape, it for sale for 180: its been stored for 10 years, any help or advice is needed, its for my first boat

I'd buy that motor in a heartbeat. I just bought a 1977 9.9 yesterday and paid 250 for it. Here is a useful link for maintaining a 9.9.

Well if it won't start... it's going to need some repairs, so maybe you shouldn't buy it then. It more than likely just needs a carb rebuild.

Well from what it looks like the motor is clean, no corrosion, looks like a nice evenrude. If its just a carb issue that's ok, has good compression and spark, but I have no idea how to work on it, its my first boat and motor. I saw same motor running for 600

Unfortunately, you won't be able to "just hang it and go", it'll need (hopefully) just a few things. Dollar investment should be small, carb kit under $20, water pump impeller under $20. Those are the least you will have to do. Anything else to make it run unknown. Purchase price is well worth the investment.

Don't worry so much about working on the carb. Once you get into it you'll see that it's pretty straight forward.

So from your knowledge I should get it, I don't mind another 150, if its more I could just sell. I'd plan on shop doing the servicing anyways

There's no doubt, yes I would get it. They are terrific motors and will last you for years.

are carb rebuild pretty frequent with the motors after being stored for so long?

carb and impeller is pretty much a given after ten years of storage, but if you take it to a shop theres a good chance that the labour cost alone will exceed what you paid for the motor. as mentioned above, the carb is relatively easy to rebuild, cant speak of the impeller tho. if you are at all comfortable with a wrench in your hand, the average guy/gal, can take care of it and save some $$$. ( the guys here in the forum are a great bunch.....and can walk you through the job with ease)
