Re: 9.9 carb adjustment

I,ve tried to adjust idle down per link that was posted and it still wont go down to a low speed for trolling. Ive pulled carberator off and cleaned it with carb cleaner and reinstalled. The motor will idle down with choke closed about 3/4s but it still idles fairly fast. As it start to die and I pull choke and it stay running then open back up and it will only run for a minut or so. When you rebuild carberator what do you change other than neddle and seat, jet, gaskets. Seem to be a simple carb with not to many internal parts. I have checked to make sure that the fuel pump is working at low RPMs. Any response will be much appriciated. Anybody out there have any similar problems?

Re: 9.9 carb adjustment

Makes a difference on the year/carb that you have. If it is pre mid 1986 & has the old metal top, the normal # of turns out as a starting point is 1 1/2. If a later plastic topped carb then closer to 3-4 as these threads are a lot finer.

Also on the pre 86 1/2s there is a slow speed throttle adjustment on the LH side looking forward of the lower cowling. This is just a low speed adjustment AFTER you get the carb set so that you can go back to a pre set trolling speed. On the post 87s there is a knob on the end of the throttle handle that does the same thing. These are sometimes hard to get it adjusted because the cable may also need adjustment inside the cowling & before it goes to the snap on ball coupler to the throttle linkage to the timign plate.

Re: 9.9 carb adjustment

The motor is a 95 and it does have a plactic top. Thanks for the info. After playing with it this morning it runs good but when you try to idle it down it just dies. It will idle down somewhat low with choke on part way. I am comparing it to a 96 Mercury 15 horse that I use to have.
