9.8hp 1979 merc fuel issues, not starting!

i recently got a 9.8 mercury outboard and am having some fuel issues, it was getting fuel fine and running wide open on the lake, now it wont turn over at all unless i put fuel straight down the plugs, i have no idea what the problem may be any suggestions would help!!! thanks!

bad fuel or dirty carb. pull the carb, dissassemble, soak in carb cleaner then blow out all the orifices.
