I have a 72 9.5 johnson. The motor starts with one pull with the choke on, revs High and then stalls. If i keep my hand covering the choke the engine will stay running. i have rebuilt the carb and the fuel pump and still have the same problem. the compression is good and the tank and lines are all fine. Could it be a vacum leak? all the gaskets on the carb are new and i put it together clean.

If hand choking it will keep it running it has a fuel supply problem, treyeme. Most likely suspect is the carb.

A careful and thorough carb cleaning that does not clear the orifices into the throat is a failed cleaning.
