G'day from Australia.

Went out fishing last night and I drifted into the shallows. Got stuck in the mud and couldn't get out for about 15 minutes. Tried throttling the engine but nothing was happening, when we finally got out of the mud, we drove for about 2 minutes, then I noticed steam and a plastic burning smell coming from the head, as soon as I seen the steam, the engine stopped. Woke the poor old coast guards up at 11:30pm and got a tow back in.

Got home, took the case off and noticed 2 wires coming from one of the top pistons had both melted. Would these wires be hard to replace ? Usually I can hear a noise coming from the throttle control thing when I turn the key but I get nothing. The tilt and trim stopped working too. The prop still spins and the top still spins aswell so at least thats a good sign.

I also noticed mud and weed inside the holes in the leg. How would you go about cleaning them out ? I think the mud got in the leg and cooked the wires ?

Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.

And could someone point me in the direction of a workshop manual or similar for this o/b.

Check the compression on the powerhead. That will give you an indication of condition. You might want to troubleshoot your overheat warning horn system, too.

you heated her up to the point you melted the wires, they grounded and likely blew the fuse that is found in the red holder,as said ,you should definatly do a compression test, often an overheat of that nature will warp the cylinder head causing comp .loss and possibility of water into cylinders,be sure to check all the melted wires ,you may need to replace the entire engine harness,if you get through all that ,you MUST replace your impeller and flush your cooling system.Best way to do that would be ,after removing the lowerunit, also remove thermostats ,get your garden hose and flush out thru the thermo openings, then put the thermo covers back on ,without the thermostats installed, flush again ,test thermostats ,placing in hot and cold water for operation ,or replace,be sure to check the screen at water passage for no debris ,clean and replace the waterpump ,however, you might be best off buying a new waterpump kit, once all back together be sure to check for cooling performance,ALSO,did you hear an overheat horn alarm,if not find out why ,perhaps it burned out as well, there are 2 sensors, one on top of each head ,they too may have been distroyed
